NBA stopped calling traveling in the 80's so MJ and others could usher in the break-away awesome dunk era.
David Stern was very open about this, they relaxed the rules to make the game more exciting and showcase the players athleticism.
None of those dunks happen, awesome dunks on breakaways don't happen without ignoring traveling - the rule as written down. They all took steps to launch themselves.
But this decade, ignoring traveling has been taken to a new level. Most players going to the hole travel everytime. They all take 3 or more steps.
Worse if they post up - they ALL get away with hopping around to gain position.
LeBron will take like one dribble while backing down a guy with 5 steps.
