I’m not sure of the origins but I don’t think it was like that at all when Spurrier was the coach or even in the early 90s.
From late 90s to 2009 or so, I think the end game was basically why show up to the game, if the team was going to get smoked 45-3. So instead it became 600 kids blacking out in the parking lot, with the lacrosse and baseball teams leading the way, along with 5 or 6 frats.
And by that time, the admin had to shut it down out of fear of lawsuits.
This coincided with the start of the Cutcliffe era and the team getting decent.
I could be wrong about the start of “tailgate” though.

What I heard was that a bunch of dookies dressed up in Halloween costumes and flipped over port a johns and stuff....Also something about a 14 year old kid getting hammered that ended the whole thing.

The students will show up but there is no such thing as a “Duke Football Fan”. The Clemson at Duke game was half a stadium of Clemson fans, a corner section of Duke students and a half empty stadium on the home side.
There are plenty of Duke football fans. But there's way more Clemson and Tar Heel fans in the area. As to be expected from a smaller private school competing against large state schools.

This was after my time, but in the end, there was definitely a younger sibling of a student who ended up going to the hospital, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he was a high schooler.
People were pretty orderly about the Port-a-Johns since half the students were female, so flipping that over seems unlikely. But this was a few years after I was out, so I don’t know.
At one of the year-end tailgates I went to, a guy was definitely arrested for doing blow off the hood of a car though.

As far as the football team, the fans there treat the team like it is an ivy league team.

This could definitely happen at the fraternity houses at UNC as well.
When I was at UNC a bunch of dookies came to He's Not for karaoke every Sunday night. Lax and frat brahs. They were decent guys but very northern compared to UNC.

Even under Cutcliffe the fans in Durham just didn’t care.
The average Duke alum isn't from North Carolina and the average Duke alum doesn't live in North Carolina.

The majority of private schools have 6,000-10,000 undergrad students. Some schools like BU, NYU, USC, etc have way more but most of those also have abysmal athletics.
There is a lot of truth to this.
Duke is ~6k undergrad and most of their alums move out of state post grad so the base just isn’t there.
Add in that basketball is and always will be the true passion in that state and it’s just not gonna ever happen.

They have won their first 4 games by 20 points i think.
I thought for sure their HC was going there to fail. Good on them.

Duke fans would go to the lacrosse match over football
They’re required too as part of the lawsuit

CFB. for example, the golden gophers stadium (50k capacity) and oregon ducks' stadium (54k) are both GREAT visual environment, and both can get VERY loud.
Add in Utah’s quaint little cottage in the mountains.

Elko to Bama after Nick

I remember when Spurrier would always put Duke #25 in his preseason poll

A&M will swoop him up after they show Jimbo and Bobby P the pavement... He will be a mo ager there. Arguably a better situation than Bama, too b/c Bama actually has a history of winning things and the alums go ballistic if you don't win by 20 every game.
Ags will be ecstatic with him and he can probably win big there. He will be the hottest coaching name on the market this year

He also left Darren McFadden off his Heisman ballot altogether after Dmac ran for 323 yds his arse and threw a TD pass. Spurrier is and always has been a clown.
