Looks like Montana State lost their QB to a leg injury on the first drive

Go Cats Go.

Barely had a chance with Mellott. Basically going to have to score on every drive to even make this competitive.

I would love to know how they’re doing this. This run has been over several head coaches. What is separating them from everyone else by such a wide margin?

They have elevated to FBS status in all but official designation. But they’re staying put and just sweeping up the trophies. That trophy case is becoming a positive feedback loop. They can point to it with any recruit and monopolize the best talent in FCS.

And they’ll keep doing it because North Dakota can’t support an official FBS program, so they’ll stay put and dominate this tier of football.

Edit: So, put another way, they’ve achieved an equilibrium that maximizes their success and they don’t disrupt it.

King of the small pond and they're content with winning championships. App State had their FCS run of success and moved up and they're doing fine...5 double digit win seasons in 8 years and a 6-1 bowl record. But their biggest reward is a New Orleans bowl. Who really cares?

Nearly every single program that has been to the fcs championship / built a decent program moves on to FBS: Boise State, Marshall, Ga Southern ,App State, C. Carolina, Marshall, UCF , USF, Liberty, UTSA , Jacksonville, Troy, James Madison ,etc.... Montana & the Dakotas( 3 semi finalists) are flagship Universities with resources while the rest of the country really doesn't care about the FCS playoffs.

UCF won an fcs national championship , but beating Florida(6-6) in the Gaspirila Bowl in front of 70k people meant more to their program/ fans than winning the FCS championship.

Well yeah, that’s what the FCS is. All those schools are D1 and have a shot at the NCAA Tourney, CWS, etc. FCS only exists for football.

UCF would rather beat Florida (6-6) in front of 70k than lose money traveling to Hammond La. or Montanta to play in front of 4k or 10k people. Southeastern La( closed down for nearly 20 years) & other FCS schools aren't in the top 5 of importance in La. Montana/ Dakotas are their flagships.

I just named nearly 20 former FCS programs( powers) that couldn't wait to bail on a division that most of the nation doesn't really care about. If it woks for Montana & the Dakotas good for them........But the rest of the country & most fans & Athletic directors have no interest in FCS . TV ratings & money proves this.

No conference will invite them due to location. Who is going to invite them? MAC? Too far west. MWC? Too far east. CUSA? Focused on expanding to the south.

NDSU wants to move up to FBS and there is rumbling at the other Dakota schools that if NDSU goes so does UND, USD, and SDSU. Problem is unless they are a part of an entire conference that moves up to FBS none of them will get invited to an established FBS conference due to location.

NDSU running back wrecks defender instead of just jogging into the endzone.

NDSU isn't eligible for the FBS level right now unless they expand their capacity.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm not attacking these schools. They are great programs that I envy & should do what's best for them , but the 20-30 best programs have bailed on the FCS & have 0 interest in being an FCS power or losing money playing in front of 4k -10k in Hammond / Montana. 1.3 million tuned in ( cable) to watch & 17k ( nice) showed up for the Championship game. Jackson State recruits was bigger news than this game.

2.7 million watched the Celebration Bowl/ 50 k attended. 60 k attended the SWAC Championship game. These FCS schools in Montana & the Dakotas are their flagship Universities while most of these other Schools barely Crack the top 10 in their own states.

NDSU since about 2007 has routinely been beating FCS programs....Big names. Minnesota, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Central Michigan and Iowa when Iowa was ranked 13th. In their mind they have nothing to prove to anyone. When they show up at your house, they aim to beat you down and throw you out of your own party....more often than not, that is exactly what the do.

They could be a weird Dakota division of the WAC when it moves up.
