Mickey Mantle hit the longest confirmed HR at 734 ft off Bill Fischer. The pitch? Fastball. Should tell you all you need to know.

No way he hit it 200 feet further than Big Mac

In a math equation yes. In practice, a hanging spinner will carry farther due to the spin. A fastball has opposite backspin to the backspin you want to apply for maximum distance.

Would be cool to have a distance contest though.

Yes and no. Yes it contributes, but not as much as you might imagine. The placement on the bat where you make contact and your swing velocity is significantly more important.

I'll put it this way...if was in the box against a pitching machine that threw 100 in the same spot every time, I should eventually be able to make contact, assuming I can get my timing down which probably means starting my swing before the ball is pitched. If I can make contact on the sweet spot, my swing velocity might be enough to hit a HR in a major league park.

If you add other factors like a modified bat and juiced ball, that would definitely help.

They don’t just lob it over. It is the same as batting practice pitching. The players in the derby get to decide who will pitch to them and it is usually the same guy who pitches batting practice to them in the season

Think about it. The harder you throw a tennis ball against a wall, the more distance it will bounce back off. Same concept. More force!
