and why was “the greatest generation” all wearing knee pads in their playing days? Seems kind of soft to me

I would hate playing in every uniform prior to the 1990s.

The St Bona picture is legit one of my favorites. Been laughing at it for years. The JNCO's of basketball.

Were pants really worn when playing? I know they’re worn during warmups, but was that the case in actual games back in the day?

If it doesn't cover the vast majority of my thigh, I don't want to wear it.

He looks like a monk. Only missing the rope belt.

I had to throw the St. Bonnies guy in there. Too funny.

The Texas dude I threw in there because he could be Matthew McConaughey's grandfather. The look similar in the face.

Here's an article about Marques Green's impossibly long shorts. He hates being cold. Hilarious.

oleantimesherald article

quote:

“WHAT HAPPENED was, I had blood on my shorts, so I had to get an alternate pair of shorts,” he said in a nearly two hour-long “Legends Week” interview for Raw Sports Films. “Now, mind you, the shorts that I did wear, they were big, too. They weren’t THAT big though …”

He then added while laughing, “But listen, I always say this, I’m on a chat with my college guys … I told them, man, I don’t have good friends. Somebody was supposed to tell me: Do not wear those shorts. They were supposed to not let me wear those shorts. Twenty years from now, this is going to look bad.

“That’s it, that’s all they had to do.”

By his admission, though, Green’s own shorts were always an attention-grabber. And while some may have viewed them as being goofy or impractical, it mattered little, as he was almost always one of the best players on the floor.

But why so big?

The Bona All-Time Team member was just trying to stay warm, he said.

“The reason I wear them big shorts and the long socks is because I get cold fast,” said Green, who also noted that he never dribbled between his legs, so they were never a big deterrent. “Anybody who knows me knows I get cold. If your air is on too high, I’m going to freeze and I’m not going to have a good time.

“I’m no good cold at all; overseas, (the) practices, gyms that are cold … I had to go to Lithuania, the hotel had no heat; it was cold. I just can’t function when I’m cold.”

Really?

60s-80s don’t seem bad at all

Not just uniforms, style of play. They were a lot stricter on things like walks and double dribbles back in the day, which led to a lot more passing. If you dribbled it above your waist it was a turnover.

I guess so. Here is a picture of the Minnesota Golden Gophers from that time period:

I despised playing in the late 90s baggy shorts

HS was so weird

our practice shorts were like 4" inseams and then our game shorts were like 12" inseams

Did not know that.

This should be a good practice rule. Low man seems to always win.

I figured that was a mistake with the bonaventure guy. I guess according to the quoted article ,he got the wrong size after getting blood on them.

I'd like to see his normal shorts if they were also too big to dribble between the legs.
Like it said in that article.

I remember florida wearing some super baggy shorts when they went back to back . The picture of the bonnie guy was ridiculous though.

This was more typical for the 2000s. Below the knee:
