After 26 years at ESPN, I am extremely disappointed to say farewell. I have been proud of my association and my work during my tenure. I was a loyal employee, displayed respect for others, worked with numerous charities, represented the company well. I always did everything asked of me and more. What did I get in return today … word that I should get lost. The only thing that mattered was my salary, which in my view was the lone reason I lost my job.

granted ole howie was probably making double what the next research guy or gal was, but still he should have a building named after him in Bristol, not shown the door.

Disney gave ESPN a profit margin it had to meet, but this is typical ESPN response. Lets fire the guy who basically built the research department for us instead of getting rid of the ridiculous contract of someone like Jamele Hill or Skip Bayless.

Makes sense given that they are fully in the entertainment business, and not the sports journalism business.

Dan Patrick was noticeably upset about it this morning.

Guy basically built that research department, and has a partially paralyzed wife at home to take care of. He was also apparently very active with the Make-a-Wish foundation and was constantly on ESPN's arse about being involved in charity. He was paid well by ESPN though, and he cannot talk to the media as part of the stipulations to his settlement.

If its not enough to retire, I hope he ends up at NBC Sports or the new Fox Sports Network.

Maybe there's a loophole in there somewhere. Maybe he can be "deep background" for Deadspin in their next set of stories targeting ESPN.

he was with the company for 26 years, and ended up leading the Stats and Info dept for many of them. you can just imagine how ballooned his salary ended up. I'm sure he will talk (maybe on DP) once the terms of his severance have passed. I'm also sure he will get snatched up by Fox or NBC or SI. He's literally the best in the business.

Why did he get a salary?

Seriously, never understood the point of his role with today's technology.

ESPN didn't either apparently and that's why he got layed off. There's no guarantee you're always going to have your million dollar job.

well BEFORE the aforementioned tech he was one of the best researchers in the country, not just sports - but period.
AFTER the tech he built and ran the stats dept at ESPN.

surely you understand the need for someone to actually run the dept, right?

He mentions ESPN maybe once a show. He always gives them credit when it's due and trashes them when it's due (more often than not these days).

Simple fact is, the guy is one of the most reasonable, knowledgable and fair journalists on sports radio (along with SVP).

I hope you enjoy listening to Cowherd's bullshite, though.
