Defenses weren't use to defending the pass as much when Marino came into the league in. How much of a priority was having a lock down corner in 1984 compared to 2011?

how so?

Other than an occasional turnover, or open field tackle they can't do anything to stop an above average passing game

I think it's put a higher premium on great secondary players. CB is one or the 4 most valuable positions right now along with QB, LT, and pass rusher, either DE or OLB

If any positions have suffered, it's RB and traditional LB positions. I could argue that your normal 4-3 OLB is fricking worthless now.

I won't argue that the rules now are more lenient to the pass, but it also should be noted that teams have realized that it is much easier to score if you utilize the whole feel with a strong passing attack.

One thing I have noticed in these last couple of pass crazy years, are all the yards being gained in the middle of the field. I don't have a stat sheet for this, but it seems to me that you can get more money in the middle than you ever could, even 5 years ago. These rule changes have taken away your safeties and LB's that's made their bank from dominating the middle and punishing people. It still happens ever so often, but a shite ton less than it used to.

we can't totally ignore the rule changes and say they've had nothing to do with these multi-5K passing seasons. Of course it's not all of it, but I'd say the flags on defenders has allowed at least an 8% increase in passing yds on a lot of teams, maybe way more on others. I think the new kick offs probably added to another 5% or so.

Rule changes for sure have made it easier to go across the middle, but that's not the only thing. Another huge reason for that are these new age, freak TEs.

I already said your normal 4-3 OLB is worthless and he's even more useless when trying to cover a Jimmy Graham. They just can't do it anymore

They could try tackling legally.

When they first started calling all of these personal fouls, I was pissed off too. And I still get annoyed. However, I definitely see a ton of players have changed the way they tackle and it's better. Defensive players need to adapt, and they will. Offensive players are taking advantage of it right now, which is no different than what Marino did when he was throwing for records.

yeah, very good point. And notice the 2 yardage leaders had probably the best TE's in the league, both freaks. And GB has Finley who isn't way behind.

Did this article just focus on Brees? Because Rodgers' play this year was even better.

Comparing a natural progression of the game to an era of another sport that was tainted by cheating is ridiculous.

I did read one thought on having 3 passers over 5,000 yards with respect to kickoffs starting at the 35. Touchbacks increased from 416 to 1120 this year.

I have no statistic with respect to average starting field position off of kickoffs, but anecdotally you could argue that for the offenses that score at will like the Saints, it's just going to make their eventual scoring part of a longer drive.

If anyone knows where said starting field position statistic is available, please share.

That's part of it and the Lockout had its effects as well. Two of the three guys who threw for over 5,000 yards have been with their teams for years and had virtually the same offensive cast and system as last season which helped with continuity. The other guy was throwing to the best wide receiver on the planet right now. Hell the MVP of the NFL would have had an outside shot of hitting 5,000 yards if he had played and may have even hit 50 tds.
