re: ESPN and others regarding the greens at the US Open

Any of y'all remember when they played this piece of shite in '04? Halfway through the weekend rounds they had to get some hoses out there if I recall correctly because putts were just tumbling off the greens like marbles.

The putting was absolutely insane to watch. For me the only injustice is that the course got significantly worse throughout the day. I have no issue with the winner being above par but the putting certainly bordered on gimmicky

Wasn't last year ridiculous the other way because the wind didn't kick in? Koepka -16, Sneds and Thomas T9 at -8, Thomas third round -9
Yea, with courses like Shinnecock and Erin Hills, where their biggest defenses are wind and fescue, it’s a really fine line between what we saw today and what we saw last year and that line all depends on the wind/rain.

They were talking to that Fay guy today who I think was head of USGA back in 2004 and he insisted that things are way better this year. That lesbian Azinger also said the course was fair today.

I’m a casual golf viewer and I watched about 4-5 hours of coverage today, probably the most I’ve ever watched in a full day, much less a weekend. IMO, it was not a good look for the PGA today. It seemed like every golfer was complaining either verbally or with their expressions on the course about the conditions. Then when Phil had a bad moment, it was hard to watch. I have no idea what the solution is going forward but they can’t have this kind of day on national TV again and expect to grow viewership and promote the game.

That was Bethpage not Shinnecock

What did the PGA do wrong?

If the group in front of you made triple or worse, they gave the greens water.
If nobody in a group made triple, the greens received no water until a triple bogey was made.
It was 100% Shinnecock.

The course would be fine if the PGA or Augusta National Golf Club were in charge of setting it up for the tournament. The problem is the USGA would rather the winning score be +10 than -1.
Saw the women's open at Shoal Creek, and there course wasn't set up this way although it could have been. It was a great tourney with a great finish. I've never understood why the USGA feels the need to do this.

I'd be down with skinny fairways.
Penalizing rough.
Then greens that aren't so fricking treacherous.
Make em tough. He'll make em unfair but give them fringe. Give them zero fringe but make the greens a TAD bit easier.
There is certainly a happy medium.

Maybe it happened at Bethpage as well, but it definitely happened at Shinnecock. Specifically the 7th hole. Golf Channel had a bit about that the other night.
ETA: Reauxl beat me to it.

Bethpage
Must have been in 2002. Last time they played at Bethpage they got shite tons of rain and had to finish on Monday.

It was Phil threw a fit on a hole and was all over the rules guy because winds and fast greens wouldn’t hold. The heavy winds and nobody could drive the ball past 250 as well.

USGA*
I get what you’re saying but to the casual fan, it’s the PGA tour with PGA players looking very boorish. I know when I watched the Masters it was a very different feel and mood. Hopefully the USGA notices this and makes the appropriate changes.

The USGA doesn’t care. They want a gimmick major that has as high a score as they can manufacture and call it a true test of golf. No, it’s unenjoyable golf. There is nothing fun about watching professionals hack around a course and playing putt putt on concrete greens. Pro sports are supposed to be entertaining, and I don’t think anyone who is honest with themselves can be entertained by this nonsense. I don’t need the USGA to provide bad golf. I can go out to any local course on the weekend to see that.

How would Augusta or PGA handle wind that was stronger than expected and dried the greens?
Just fine, they aren't over manipulating the greens to the point of losing them. Augusta and the PGA just want exciting golf, they aren't obsessed over making it this brutal test where they are setting up courses in a manner that they weren't designed for.
