Hot Rod Hundley use to often recall the night he and Elgin “combined for 73 pts” (Baylor had 71)

I loved that 60's era of the NBA. Give me a starting 5 of
SF- Elgin Baylor
PF- Bill Russell (playing out of position, but as Bill Walton says, it's about players, not positions)
C- Wilt Chamberlain
OG- Jerry West
PG- Oscar Robertson
and I'll take my chances against any starting 5 from any era of the NBA, including today.

Just read his book. Interesting read. Used to watch him coach the Jazz. Didn't have much success here despite having Pete Maravich. Just saw him on an episode of the White Shadow last night. lol

During the 1961-62 season — his absolute apex — Baylor somehow managed to serve double-duty as Lakers forward and members of the U.S. Army Reserve.
As Buss also included in her statement, Baylor was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Instead of using his weekend passes to head home or take a load off, he drove to NBA games. In 48 appearances that season, he averaged 38 PPG and 19 RPG.

He didn’t have anybody around Maravich. Truck Robinson was a good rebounder but Gail Goodrich was past his prime. Rich Kelley was a 7-footer whose talent was being 7 feet tall. The rest of the team was crap. They still almost made the playoffs in 1977-78 and that was back when only 6 per conference got in.

RIP. He was one of the all time greats. I used to have season tickets to the New Orleans Jazz games when he was an assistant under Butch Van Breda Kolff then later as head coach. Th mild mannered Baylor was quite a contrast to the flamboyant VBK.

You should go look at Hot Rods old highlights from college at WVU. He was basically the first Globetrotter from the moves he pulled on the court during games. They said if he hasn't of goofed around so much he would have been an amazing basketball player. Him and Jerry West used to play pick up games together at the YMCA back when they are in high school.

NOBODY deserved to win an NBA championship more than Baylor. Unfortunately, dude was CURSED as GM of the Clippers, SOOOOOO many debilitating injuries to top picks and acquisitions.
