happened to be in that area the other day and drove by the school. field looked awful. nobody was practicing. I was just looking at the BR prep report for baseball games yesterday, today, and tomorrow and they weren't listed anywhere.

How do these schools just stop having teams?

Pretty sure they still do, only reason I say this is because I was in store last week and saw a girl with Tara softball uniform on. Guessing if they still have softball most likely still have baseball team.

It is kinda sad seeing the downfall of sports programs around here. I played ball for Broadmoor in late 90's and we had some damn good teams. Talked to a guy that helps coach them now recently, said for few years they had a hard time getting 9 guys that could catch a fly ball.

Why is this happening in the Capitol city? I wonder if it's pervasive throughout the state or just BR area high schools?

Haha, I looked up Broadmoor and they are 0-9 and have lost last 6 games by score of:

17-1
14-4
16-1
23-1
18-8
18-0

Sad.

Yeah, played with Mike from little league through HS. Was year younger. Mike was the best athlete I ever played with or against.

I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate, but I think EBRPSS demographics have changed a good bit in the past 15 years. When I was in HS, Glen Oaks, Istrouma, Capitol, etc had baseball teams. None of them do now. Young black athletes are way more interested in basketball and football. I just don't think those schools have enough interest to field a team.

Do you really not know the answer to this question?

Even the football teams have issues getting a team together. Kids would rather go frick off after school then play sports. The sports programs don't have a lot of money Either

Yep, kids that live half way across town they don't want to or can't stay after school till 5-6 for practice because they have no way of getting home. Parent/Parents either can't or don't want to come pick them up.

Tara baseball is hangin on by a thread...

Broadmoor is a bad team...BUT they have one of BR area's Best Hitters in Wade Jackson(transfer from Catholic HS Soph. year)...Jackson will be headed to Jackson MS this Summer for MLB Try-outs...dude is batting about 700%! Walker clobbered Broadmoor 17-1...HOWEVER everybody in the stands knew Wade Jackson was the best player for either club! Went 2 for 3 & just missed hitting a HR...

Belaire was a powerhouse baseball program back in the day...today one of BR's finest fields lay dormant!

Inner city kids tend to stay away from baseball these days(Scotlandville Magnet HS has a Solid program)....this is what Roger Cador & Urban League is trying to change...

I helped coach at Lee for a few seasons before it closed, this was definitely a big problem. We had to drive kids home all over town after practices and games. Grades were always an issue as well.

I agree, but why? (here comes the can of worms being opened)

Serious question for anyone who can answer, are there local little leagues anymore where any kid from the neighborhood can just sign up an play on a baseball team?

I don't care where people stand on the travel ball argument, but it just seems like youth baseball has completely changed over the last 10-15 years. Now it almost seems like a posh sport where in order to play, a kid needs a family who is willing to spend a not unsubtantial sum of money to do so. Just 20 years ago just about every young boy in my town played little league, regardless of their ability or their family's income. Now that doesn't seem to be the case.

Correlate that to black high schools and schools like Tara and Broadmoor where many of the white kids don't come from families with means, and IMO, I think you see part of the reason for the decline in baseball participation at these schools.

I was part of that powerhouse back in the late 80s. Spent many hours working on that field, too. We took a great deal of pride in it, along with Coach Sisemore.

It's very sad that they no longer even have baseball there.

I think there are a couple of things going on, but a big one has to be that football and basketball are sports with bigger followings and seen as a better chance of hitting the big payday.

Another is that baseball viewership is not what it used to be while football and basketball viewership has exploded. If you're not a fan of the game, you probably aren't going to end up playing it.

Baseball isn't like basketball, where you get some 7' stiff pushed hard to play because he's got the perfect body for it, regardless of his interest in the game.

Problem is that you have to get to The Show first and prove yourself, meaning you likely get a crap contract and spend a lot of years, if not your whole career, getting no further than AA ball.

It's a lot easier, from their POV, to show their asses in college and get a guaranteed NBA contract or a big NFL signing bonus.
