I consider Doc to be one of the leagues best. Phil, Sloan, Pop and Doc are my top 4 in no part. order. His strategy vs the Cavs was perfection. In game adjustments and game plans were light years ahead of that idiot Mike Brown.

He took advantage of every mis-match on the floor and the Cavs had zero answers. Thoughts on Doc.

I hope he doesn't leave either, because I want the Hornets to get Tom Thibodeau.

I don't think I take him over guys like Larry Brown, Stan Van, etc., but he is a good coach. His sideline speech ESPN showed where he said, "I know you all want to win, but you have to do it TOGETHER" kinda gave me chills. Players respond to that type of passion IMO.

Larry Brown, Skiles, and Stan Van Gundy would go in my list ahead of Doc.

I liked that little speech too

I used to think the guy was a joke... he's a very good coach.

Simmons has come around on Doc. Somewhat

It is amazing how much better of a coach Doc became when he got Allen and Gernett though

I think Simmons is great when it comes to basketball. He really knows the game and usually has great analysis, but I've always thought he was way off base when it comes to Rivers. I really think he is an outstanding coach.

And yes, he absolutely owned Mike Brown in this series. That was the biggest out-coaching job I've seen since Larry Brown made Philly Jackson his bitch in the Lakers-Pistons finals several years ago.

Doc's good at getting the best out of his players and he's a players coach but he isn't a great x's and o's guy. His assistant coaches make him look better than he is, plus he's got a veteran team that doesn't need much teaching.

BS ripped on Doc throughout the 08 championship run FWIW.

And from an x's and o's standpoint, Doc Rivers is nothing special. He's got great assistants and players who are willing to buy in.

Fwiw part of being a good head coach iis surrounding yourself w/ a staff that compliments your abilities well. So saying that Rivers is an excellent motivator who surrounds himself w/ strong X's and O's guys to compensate is actually a testament to what a really good coach he is.

Totally agree with this. Last night I saw these veteran guys in the huddle buy into his "team" concept. I cant remember the last time Ive seen this in the NBA. If you watch time outs its impossible to even have 5 guys listen to the coach anymore.

Absolutely. When I'm forming my opinion of an NBA coach, I put a great deal of stock in watching the players' body language, attentiveness, and general response to the coach in he huddle. Doc's players always seem into it.

People ripped on Doc in '08 saying that it was the players that won and Doc had little to nothing to do with it... and it was a joke for a coach like Doc to win a title. He's the perfect coach for that wide variety of personalities, just like George Karl is to the nuggets.
