Do you think horses know they’re racing against each other?

Or are they just running as fast as they can until their owner quits whipping them?

I’m not sure if they know they’re racing, but I bet they’d be quite shocked to learn they get shot in the head if they twist their ankle.

I mean, technically no since a horse doesn't know what a race is or the concept of competition. In as much as they know they are surrounded by other horses and have a natural instinct to run at the front of the herd though yeah they know they are racing. Horses are well known to exhibit herding behavior and "race" each other.

I guess the best way to explain it is they want to run ahead of the other horses but don't know why they should be there.

There are horses that want to be in lead; then there are other reasons.

American Pharoah went crazy gear when he had a horse kick mud into his face at the Preakness. Gate 1

He will not let another horse in front

Horses know what's going on.

Secretariat used to pose for the cameras.

Horses aren't mindless animals just running because you give them the whip.

William Nack said he once saw Secretariat look up in the sky because there was a plane flying over and Secretariat stared at it until it was gone.

Anyone who's ever been around horses knows they are intelligent, personable animals. You can tell sometimes when they are sad, scared, happy, etc. Their eyes tell the story.

Horses also know they are running against other horses and someone is whipping them to go faster. That's all they need.

Cows on the other hand are pretty mindless dummies.

Yes.

Horses are smart, they know whats up.

ETA: Cool story about Secretariat. Like humans I would imagine the 'best' are intelligent and have personalities that expand from that. Most stupid. Some extraordinary. Just more in tune with the earth than humans

I firmly believe they do. Its in their DNA. Horses in the wild race during stampedes. Its a trait. When the bell rings and they start running, nature kicks in and the will to lead the pack takes over. I suppose they don't know the reason why somebody is on their back riding them, but they do understand the basic nature of what's going on.

Hey George fyi jockeys ride horses, not the owners.

Horses are trained based on their running style, speed and stamina to run a certain race that meets their skill level.

Horses do know they are competing as they even have horses that savage other horses during the race. Look it up.

Most Male horses if they win a graded race get to mate 100 to 200 female horses a year for 10-15 years.

People pay thousands to tens of millions of dollars for thoroughbred race horses.

Race horses are bathed, have their feet cleaned, have dentist and a doctor look at them 3 to 4 times a week.

As far a being retarded, that is where they leave that up to guys like you. Who are clueless, have no athletic ability and need to spout off something and sound smart and come off like boogereating was their major at that 1 semester of college they flunked out of...
