What is stopping teams from shifting the catcher into the outfield with nobody on base and fewer than two strikes? Would allow them to cover much more ground with an additional outfielder. Obviously with two strikes you would need a catcher to prevent base runners reaching on a dropped third strike.

I could see more bunts going for hits but you could shift up the corner infielders and probably be okay, especially with slower hitters. Would be bad for umpires but they wear padding and that shouldn’t be the fielding team’s problem anyway.

It’s called a catchers box. And yes he must stay in it.

Rule 5.02 Fielding Positions

When the ball is put in play at the start of, or during a game, all fielders other than the catcher shall be on fair territory.

(a) The catcher shall station himself directly back of the plate. He may leave his position at any time to catch a pitch or make a play except that when the batter is being given an intentional base on balls, the catcher must stand with both feet within the lines of the catcher's box until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand.
PENALTY: Balk.

Major League Level: No

Kids level: I guess if the rules never explicitly say that you have to have a catcher, just that if he's there he has to be behind the plate. So therefore if the substitution rules allow you to sub players at free will, you can sub your catcher out until 2 strikes and then sub him back in?

I have zero idea on how substitutions work in youth baseball and this is the only loophole I can possibly see and I feel like an idiot for even coming up with it.

There's a lot of things preventing the catcher from leaving the box under most circumstances before the pitcher's release.

Do you need a pitcher? Just put the pitcher in the outfield and you will never lose a game.

You won’t win one either, but you’ll never lose.

16 balls due to not pitched in time will cost you a run.

I’m sure the umpire would appreciate a heater coming right at his chest. One of many reasons why this is dumb.

Baseball would be a hell of a lot more interesting if they actually enforced this rule, considering almost every pitch is never in time.
