One BIG difference is that Winston won a national title and a Heisman Trophy, but...

quote:

Aside from coaching parallels, Winston (6 foot 4, 231 pounds) and Russell (6-5½, 258) share the same type of big, soft bodies and, according to some scouts, the penchant for turning the ball over.

quote:

"Lack of focus by JaMarcus is what I see in Winston," the personnel man said. "They're physically talented, but during the course of a game they kind of lose their focus and just put the ball up for grabs.

quote:

"I see the body. I see the lack of focus. I see the same coach and system. Only Winston's not as good an athlete and his arm isn't as strong as JaMarcus'."

quote:

"We're looking at another guy (Winston) that's a product of the system and has tremendous athletes around him," another personnel man said. "Oh, my goodness.

quote:

"Is this guy really going to be the first pick of the draft? You'd be drafting a quarterback that can't run, has off-field problems, has no power in his legs and makes bad decisions on the field

quote:

"Somebody's going to make a horrible mistake."

If he goes to a shitty organization yeah.

JRock would have been a different story on a different team.

I don't like the guy, personally...but I think he's going to be good. Just my opinion.

Right.... That's why Winston had so many second half comebacks last year

Even if he's a bust, i don't think he takes the title of the biggest NFL bust because the money spent on rookies isn't what it used to be.

I agree with every single thing that scout said.

I don't see the connection between Winston & Russell at all. Sounds like lazy scouting imo.

So did Russell while at LSU.

We beat two top ten teams on the road, undefeated #3 Alabama in 2005 and #8 Tennessee in 2006, despite trailing in the second-half of both games.

In fact, Russell had several second-half comebacks on his resume.

It helps when you are surrounded by a plethora of talent and future NFL starters.

Which is heavily exaggerated in Winston's case.

Another scout brought it back to Russell, saying, "He's got that same smile that JaMarcus had. They light the room up. That's what Jameis seems to be doing."

this def sounds like a lazy comparison. Jamarcus really didn't light up a room that I remember. he had somewhat of a reserved personality and would crack this little smile at times, but not too much. you might not know he's in the room if for no other reason than he's a big dude.

Jameis on the other hand is a lot more outgoing and more of a "you hear him before you see him" type. I almost agree with one of the scouts about him being somewhat of a salesman.

And no substance abuse issues and he genuinely loves the game. Almost so many differences that the comparison is silly.

I don't remember Jamarcus getting in any trouble with the law while in college, but I've been up for a while.

JRock didn't get into any trouble at LSU. though there was the classic Rant episode of him having grade issues that prevented him from traveling with the team to the 05 Peach Bowl. and then it turned out he made some academic honor list or something.

there really wasn't anything pointing to him being a bust. his numbers had gone up every yr, the physical tools were obvious, good intangibles (the comebacks/ clutch play, playing thru injury). the weight may have been a little concern, but he was looking good at workouts.

I just don't think he had the drive to be great. couple that with some deaths in his family and the Raiders environment, and there's your bust.

I think Russell was a bust because the Raiders are an abysmal organization.

No.
Russell didn't win a SB in his third season.

Russell had several 2nd half comebacks in his career at LSU as well.

No. Winston won't be another Russell because Russell was good with his money and never has to work again.
