I'm sure they are considered such internationally, and the government is recognized as the legit gov't by some if not most nations. However, that doesn't change the fact that said government does not exercise control over paper borders and has been in constant conflict for nearly all of its existence. It's a failed state and as such not really a country - just internationally recogonized geographic border housing disunited warring people/chieftains.

The United Nations seems to think that they are a country. Just sayin'...

I've already covered that and explained. You just want to go by a meaningless definition and ignore the facts.

If you read the Chronicle article, it is readily apparent that Mutombo had no part in helping out the hostages and may even have been involved in some sort of set-up as his relative was the only person who wasn't taken hostage. All of this happened after Mutombo thought he was getting screwed on the deal.
In the best case scenario, he tried to use semi-illegal means to get rid of valuable minerals.
And yes, Congo and DRC (formerly Zaire) are two separate countries.

But I do agree that the DRC is a failed state.

Which is the "country" under discussion.

The fact is that Congo is a country.
And why are we even talking about this? That's the most irrelevant part of this thread.

So is Somalia. That doesn't mean it portrays any of the characteristics of a centralized nation-state in reality. The DRC one could easily argue isn't a singular nation-state. The Republic of the Congo is good bit more stable.
This situation was in the DRC

In name only that's why I said it's not really a country.

You tell me pal....maybe we're growing through this journey?

Well, regardless, I think we'll agree that because of the situation over there, he should keep his arse in the States and not mess around with those folks.
