The details are tough to sort, but former NBA defensive star Dikembe Mutombo was allegedly involved in setting up a sizable gold deal in Kenya that ended up with a Congolese general seizing $10 million worth of the mineral and the New York-based purchaser spending $30 million to free hostages taken in central Africa.

He was smuggling gold so that he could free hostages, though.

I don't think he is in trouble with the US. But I am sure those governments over that have hostages aren't really cool with people smuggling gold into their country to free them...

I can honestly say, I have no idea what this story means exactly.

I think Dikembe is the good guy in the story, just wrong place

This.

And it's not like he can hide out anywhere and be inconspicuous.

Dude needs to seek asylum over here ASAP.

Yeah, he sent me an email about this a while back. Needed to park some money in my checking account.

I don't see how you got to that conclusion. The Chronicle article basically says Mutombo was trying to sell gold that wasn't allowed to leave the country.

When it seemed like Mutombo was going to get much less than the initial cut, the deal went haywire...

Dikembe Mutombo knows that Ron Paul is going to be the next President of the United States so he's trying to smuggle as much gold into the United States because he knows it's going to be our next currency.

Here's a better link from a Houston Chron blog, with more detail:

ETA: And Mutombo comes across as fairly shady - he's dealing in conflict minerals, misrepresenting himself. He may not be in trouble here or in Congo (not even a country really) but his reputation as a good guy has been damaged.

How, exactly, is Congo not a country?

It's a failed state with fluctuating borders.

Pretty sure that the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of the Congo are both active nations.
