God, I hope the players don't give in to 17 games.

quote:

Smith, who is currently engaged in negotiations with the NFL on the next collective bargaining agreement ahead of the current deal's expiration in March 2021, said Tuesday if players want to receive everything they're seeking, a two-year strike may be necessary.

"People need to understand that it's really easy to call for a work stoppage; it's really hard to win one," Smith said at the rally. "So that's why I started notifying players four years ago about saving their checks, making changes to their debt structure, and the reality is that if we want to hold out and get everything we want, that's probably going to mean a two-year strike."

In the next CBA, the NFL and its owners are seeking the ability to expand the regular season to 17 games during the deal, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN. The option to expand playoffs is also being considered, and the league would shorten the preseason slate if the regular-season schedule receives an increase. Another obstacle in negotiations is what the appropriate increase in revenue share for the players — which is currently a 47% minimum — is to agree to a longer season.

They players can barely handle a 2 month strike. What makes him think they will fulfill a 2 year one?

I love that the answer for extending the regular season is that they will do them a big favor and reduce the preseason.

Reducing the preseason only takes away opportunities for lesser players to grind to make the roster / first call type opportunities of the practice squad. Also, your starters and those most exposed to injury throughout the season hardly play the pre-season anyways, therefore reducing it does not effectively balance out the addition of another full speed real game. I hope the league cannibalizes itself hard. A multi year lockout sounds great to me ! Let’s do it

Decrease preseason to 3 games
Keep regular season at 16 games (cuz seriously 17 makes no fricking sense in how you would allocate who you play. the current system and setup makes sense)
Turn 53 man roster to 60 man roster, no practice squad now, and all can be active on game day (wtf is that rule anyway?)
4 players can be placed on IR-designated to return

Yes I’m sure they’ve done this. Maybe 5% of the players in the league could withstand that type of hold out.

Agree on both of these. Have 1 home and away preseason game and 1 neutral site. Season ticket holders would be happy because its one less full price ticket they have to buy for a meaningless game.

The reasoning behind having gameday inactives was so each team had the same number of available players on gameday so a team dealing with 6-7 injuries wasn’t at even more of a disadvantage vs a healthy opponent. Whether you’re completely healthy or have 6 guys who can’t go, both teams would have an equal number of players available for the game

The NFL doesn’t want to go to 17 games. But the players believe they do, so they’ll give up important shite to get them to drop it.

Most of the players would cross their own picket line. They can’t afford to not play for 2 years. They wouldn’t strike for anywhere near that long

A two year strike will see millions of fans walk away from the NFL for good. College football will be strengthened, maybe the XFL will have some success. I say do it, frick the NFL and Goodell. Let them ruin their business model and piss away whatever good will remains after the last five years or so of their shitshow.

Yep.

I loathe Goodell, but he's been playing chess while DeMaurice Smith plays checkers, and that's been the dynamic for a decade now.

I don't envy Smith, though. Given the size of NFL rosters and player turnover in football, the NFLPA is too big to have any real power because the players are incapable of sticking together and putting up a united front.

This is exacerbated by the fact that such a large percentage of players are making at or near league minimum or flat out irresponsible with their money and couldn't weather a work stoppage for any semblance of time.

Hell, in the 2011 lockout there weren't any games canceled save for the Hall of Fame Game, and you started to see some players come out in early July and say they needed to make concessions to make a deal because they couldn't hold on. Vince Young was one of the notable ones who took a 'lockout loan' at 20% interest because he was running out of money.

If D Smith is your leader, then you are basically asking to get a raw deal.

Zero fricks given.
