His K/9 was actually a relatively modest (compared to todays strikeout pitchers) 10ish per 9. Cole is at 13.7 this year. If Cole pitched 332 innings like Ryan did he'd be on pace to strikeout 506 batters.

Ryan pitched when guys weren't taking donkey hacks from the 8 hole on the lineup. More sac bunting and moving guys over. Today's hitting mentality of swinging out of your arse leads to more Ks.

9 straight games with 10 strikeouts or more has never been done...

Until now!

I also wonder if his competitive ego will allow him to continue to be the #2 guy behind Verlander, especially if he is second to him on the Cy Young.

Yep. Certainly in Houston 2017 made JV the town hero even turning Keuchels corner into an afterthought in just the few weeks post waiver deadline.

Even national guys see it that way too listening to morning show on MLB Phillips said his vote goes to JV because "hes the alpha dog of the staff and Cole gets to rid in under his shadow with no pressure"

Now just based on age cole could double JVs tenure and surpass him but it will be several years before its "cole's staff". Just like how (though there was a much bigger disparity) those D backs teams were the big units teams not schillings

I tend to agree, but I think JV will win it.

OK.... Cole’s done. Let’s hear it from everyone- who SHOULD win the Cy Young and who WILL win it?

ETA- I’d vote for Cole but I think Verlander will win it.

JV will win it as an IOU/lifetime achievement award. He certainly should have won 2016, and probably 2012. The voters arent going to let him miss another IMO. Purely on the numbers though it probably should be Cole BUT I do think there is something to JV being the workhorse of the staff.

Congratulations Cole on winning the CY Young. Overall better stats than Verlander.

(Verlander will still get it as a lifetime achievement award though)

Astros are sweeping the awards

MVP
CY Young
ROY

the only one I wouldn't give to them is manager of the year as I believe Boone deserves it
