I still don't believe the Phillies would have sent their lead scout to Corpus last night if they thought he was going to veto a deal

Hamels wants to go to LA Dodgers. that isn't a secret. I think we would absolutely go to SF but SF don't have the package that Astros or Texas could offer in prospects and that is what they need sorely

Of course they would. The Astros have the ability to make the best package available. The Phillies would be shooting themselves in the foot by announcing "Astros are out".
Even if Hamels has said "No fricking way I'm going to Houston" -- the Phillies would've told him to keep his mouth shut and they'll get him traded. They need to make other teams believe the Astros are in the running -- it increases the pressure on the other teams to meet the Astros potential package. You send your top scout to make it look good.
In the end... I think Hamels will be starting for the Astros on Friday or Saturday of this week.
ETA: I don't think the Phillies would knowingly lie to Luhnow. And I don't think Luhnow would be pursueing Hamels without getting Phillies to verify that Hamels would go to Houston. If Luhnow goes in blindly, he's unwitting driving up the price for Hamels. A higher price for Hamels means a higher price for Price,Samardzija, and others. If Lunhow has been told, "well, we don't know if Cole will accept a trade to you or not" -- he is a damn idiot and Ryno has been right about him all along.

I would be pretty surprised if they end up making a deal for him

y'all hear the caller on MT show today who said he has a buddy who is a lawyer who was at batting practice yesterday and he overheard Lunhow talking to an Usher at MMP and he was sharing info about trying to trade for Jose Bautista for Jonathan Singleton, Mark Appel and/or Cash considerations??
Posted on 7/29/15 at 4:45 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
the cash considerations got me. I laughed for about an hour.

I could see him throwing it out in our end to drive up the price for Texas, and he doesn't intend on dealing for another starter. I just feel like the Phillies wouldn't waste those resources scouting players if the potential of a deal is zero

Hamels is leveraging to go to Los Angeles, but the Rangers and Astros made better offers. Texas is not on the list of 20 teams Hamels can veto so he has been told he can waive his no trade clause and go to Houston, or be traded to the Rangers.
All signs point to this.

Sounds like they have 24 hours.

Drellich: Source: Astros and Padres gaining steam in trade talks. Multiple sources say nothing in red zone yet, though.

Have you Ubered to/from a night game? Is there any surge charging? Just got my tickets but wont be able to head down that way until 5:30 which hopefully gets me there a little after 6. Trying to figure out my best parking options.

The Astros and Padres are gaining steam in talks over pitching, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday. Multiple people close to the situation said nothing was in the red zone yet, however. The Astros continue to talk to many teams.
Closer Craig Kimbrel and starting pitchers Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner all could be fits for the Astros, who are being opportunistic and looking for the best deal at the deadline as opposed to searching for one specific piece on the roster, but there’s still a belief pitching is a more likely acquisition than hitting. A starting pitching upgrade would be a de facto upgrade for the bullpen.
As one person close to the situation put it, “things can turn on a dime” in terms of what direction the Astros go.
The Astros remain in on Cole Hamels but do not expect to land the pitcher, a person familiar with the situation said, with the Rangers still regarded as the favorite.
The persons spoke to the Chronicle on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk about trade talks.
