It's a Latin culture thing. Oppenheimer is his mother's maiden name. Married women don't typically take their husband's name but children are named their fathers name followed by mothers maiden name but they're called by their fathers name. It's more common with Latin baseball players than you're aware of. Albert Pujols full name is Albert Pujols Alcantara.
