No LSU baseball but worry not my friends.....Astros have 2 games today at noon (split squad obviously)

Anyone know if they'll she showing the games on MLB.tv?

And a bonus for those feeling extra Houstonian....Dynamo kick off their season at 2

ETA: here's one of the lineups for the games today

Also, Drellich just tweeted this a few min ago:

Hinch says middle of month, three game stretch at home is when Astros have to start honing in on 1B competition. Reed likely to play 9 today

It is pretty clear after just a few games who has the better approach and potential at the plate between Singleton and Reed.

If Duffy has a solid spring I could see him getting the opening day job since he's already on the 40 man and doesn't really have anything left to prove at AAA

Sure, but if Reed is ready, he's ready. We're a title contender so the time to jack around with service time has passed.

He would have to tear it up to show he's ready. Hasn't even played above AA yet so I don't think they want to throw him into the fire yet

I know it's a reach, but Doc Gooden says hi. Every player is different. If he gets it, he gets it. Time spent at AAA isn't going to change that.

If he keeps outclassing Singleton this spring, pick Reed. I don't think Correa needed and know LMC didn't need any AAA time to be good big leaguers.

Give Singleton a chance, a little patience goes a long way

I would be perfectly fine with giving Reed the opening day job. You can hit him 7th or so where there isn't a ton of pressure on him as well

As long as he hits this spring. He has to earn it.

Reed is hitting .200 this spring so far. The same doesn't apply to him? He isn't outclassing anyone so far, albeit only after 3 games. Still a wide open competition at this point that I believe Reed or White would have to noticeably outperform the others to take over the opening day gig. Neither have done that yet.

I'm willing to give singleton 400 AB's.

He's already probably got 180-200 AB's in the past 2 years.

He's got 200 AB's to prove he belongs IMO.

Anything less than that and we're not giving him a fair shot.

Yes.

Just giving my opinion. He looks like the better hitter by a long ways from what I've seen since last year.

If Reed, Duffy and White all have similar springs and Singleton blows, I think they should and go with Duffy. We don't need spring training to know that Reed has a better approach than Singleton, but unless he absolutely tears it up to prove that he is ready, he will start at AAA.

Batting .171 in 357 ABs in MLB. I would guess he will get a month to start the season to show significant improvement.

Wow I was way off

Didn't realize he had that many major league AB's.

Yeah he's got about 100 AB's to make a statement. The clock is definitely ticking

FWIW I have never been a Singleton guy. I think he is pretty worthless. I'm just pointing out that no one has started off Spring great in their limited ABs. No one is winning or losing up to this point, IMO.

Singleton has had a couple at bats where he worked the count full and got rung up twice on balls that could have been ball 4. So the approach has been decent.

I'm not ready to cast him off after 2 spring games. Pitching is generally more ahead of the bats in the early going anyway. Not to mention none of the 1st base candidates have lit things up either.

AJ has a few things working against him to make the team anyway. He's not on the 40 man and the team has almost always played the arbitration clock game.
