Floating change up is correct..the big league hitting coach job has definitely moved from counselor to being a film maven. Especially with organizations employing advanced metrics and a more statistical approach. They help provide their hitters and teams with detailed info and notes on pitchers...their previous abs against them and recent video from current performances.
One good example is Evan Gattis said he wasn't in the lineup one game but knew he was going to be used a PH toward the end of the game. The spot in the lineup was coming up and the pitching coach was in the tunnel showing him a premade video package of the 2 pitchers he may likely face along with a page of notes.

And after the video, Gattis paused and reflected. Then he laughed and decided to swing at everything he sees like always.

True. Gattis loves to take a pitch right down the cock before swinging at balls around his ankles.
I want him gone. If he could catch again, that would change things though. But he is not good enough to be a DH only.

Was it just me or did Keuchel throw five strikes that were called balls in the eighth inning of Game 5?

He definitely got squeeze big time that inning.

Jon Heyman floated the idea that Alex Gordon will decline his player option and become a free agent.

I'm okay with him. I think he has tremendous potential. Keep in mind, this was his 3rd season of MLB ball. Also, he has not had the typical baseball career most of his peers have benefited from to mature. I'm all for giving him another full season as the DH, provided he gets some off-season work on pitch recognition and selection.
I guess we can cut him loose and go after JD Martinez?

He has enough MLB at bats that have been consistent to say he is not good enough to be a DH only. If he can catch again, that ups his value enough to keep him IMO. I'm also not saying to dump him for a turkey sandwich; he has decent trade value.

He's been on a stead decline the last 3 years and will want at least a 4 year contract. No think you.

I think Luhnow signs Colby to a 1+1Player Option at about $9.5mil/yr. I think Colby will jump on that offer. Unless some team goes crazy and offers him a 3 yr deal. I don't see anyone willing to do that. He had a great post-season but his year over-all was below average and he set a career high in strikeouts.
I hated when Luhnow first signed him. I was probably the most vocal about how shitty of a pick-up I thought he was. But I was definitely wrong about him. He was valuable all season, despite his troubles at the plate.
Short Answer: I would prefer Rasmus over Gordon. I don't see Gordon succeeding in the Astros lineup. I think he would regress bit time.

yeah, we disagree on this point. That said, I'm all for an upgrade at the DH spot if it could happen. Otherwise, I'd rather Luhnow spend time/money/efforts upgrading other areas first.

If we have 8 other ML hitters around him and he is batting 8th or 9th I would keep him...

I'm not proposing spending a dime on the DH spot. I think we will have more options to mix-and-match than to have to use a set DH. Giving more guys days off from playing in the field is always helpful over the course of a long season.
And if we do have a set DH, I have a feeling Tyler White is going to state his case.
I just look at the numbers and think Duffy and White make the team. We may just keep Valbuena to platoon with Duffy (who has murdered lefties in the minors) at 3B. Moran probably gets a whole year in AAA no matter how well he does if we keep Luis or Jed (I suspect only one stays).
White is learning to catch and already plays 1B well enough. Tucker needs more ABs, and he may have to find a chunk of them as a DH if we do indeed sign a big ticket OF free agent.
I don't hate Gattis, but I really think he needs to play a position (catcher and/or first base) to earn ABs. I never want to see him in LF again.

Working the count is only part of an approach. I said working count because we didnt do it well the last few weeks. By approach I want a good AB depending on the situation. Some call for working counts, others for hitting the ball in the air,to a side of the infield, in the air, so on and so forth. Working a count is just part of that.

I see Greinke is opting out and will demand max value.
Right up Ryno's alley.

Thoughts?
I agree. Too rich.

A package of three Astros pitchers – Francis Martes, Josh Hader, and Joseph Musgrove – most likely would have the convinced the Padres to part with closer Craig Kimbrel, a baseball source told Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. However, a third piece, thought to be Musgrove, was too rich for Houston’s blood. The Padres could very well make Kimbrel available once again this winter.
