Whats everyones opinion on them going after a big catcher? Matt Weiters, anyone? A lot better bat than anything we have, gold glove defense, great at throwing out base runners (frick you Conger...although your robot is legit). Assuming he turns down his QO, would you be ok with the Astros pursuing him and giving up a top draft pick for .249/.315/.434 with 20-plus home runs and gold glove defense? That's his 3-year average before his 2014 tommy john surgery.

And Winter meetings are just around the corner. Will be fun to follow.

edit: and I'd be pumped if they went after Wieters and gave up the draft pick, fwiw. He's probably #1 on my free agent wish list considering I think catcher is our biggest problem going forward.

Edit 2: I haven't read this thread. This may have already been discussed.

I'm concerned about his health going forward. If you could guarantee me that he could catch 90-100 games a year I would for sure, but he's had trouble staying on the field.

I wouldn't hate the move but it's very risky

There is concern as TJ is obviously a big deal, but it has a solid rate of recovery success nowadays. And he had TJ during a season, which automatically wipes out that season and most of the next while he is being eased back into playing time (he still slashed .267/.319/.422 with eight home runs in 75 games after his return last June while splitting starts at C, DH, 1B). Before that it wasnt like he suffered from multiple injuries year in & year out that caused him to hit the DL multiple times per year. Prior to 2014 when he underwent TJ surgery, he had four straight seasons of 130-plus games played and 3 of those 4 he had 500-plus ABs. So he actually played more games than most starting catchers for 4 straight years until the TJ year.

And if there is still concern, it'll probably be universal around the league which may drop his price tag. Even better

An astros rep just called me and invited me down to the stadium and said he can show me around the facility and check out the dugouts and stuff. Has anyone taken them up on the offer? I know he is going to try to sell me season tickets but I guess it could be cool.

@jcrasnick: Hearing a lot of early #Cubs, #Orioles and #Astros chatter on free agent OF Alex Gordon at the GMs meetings.

Adding Gordon could be exciting.

Springer, Gomez and Gordon
I hope Gomez can bounce back and have an all star type of season.

Can you imagine how much of an arse he will be if he is playing well DURING a FA year?

Off topic. This snippet from MLBTradeRumors about Pujols made me smile big time.

quote:

While the Halos obviously will hope to get Pujols back as soon as possible, the team will also surely be cautious. After all, the veteran is still owed $165MM over six seasons.

Not sure if you guys have seen this...

The Astros have shut down A.J. Reed for the rest of the Arizona Fall Season.

The move is to make sure Reed is fresh for spring training.

Confirms to me that he's on the fast track.

I'm not enthralled with giving a 31 year old Gordon a bunch of money. BUT I'm actually in love with the thought of him in our line up.

Altuve .353 OBP
Gordon .377 OBP
Correa .345 OBP
Springer .367 OBP
Gomez .314 OBP
Lowrie (career .328 OBP)

I put Lowrie's career number in there. It was .312 last year which isn't great but not far below average and he sucked after his injury.I'm not sure if Valbuena will be back and what to make of him. He had a career year for power but it disappeared in the second half although he was a much better hitter.

.270 .359 OBP 9 doubles 6HR 20RBI in 55 games. I'd love to have that Valbuena in the lineup plus he's a great defender at 3rd. Although I don't know what you do with Valbuena and Lowrie.

Then there's the Carter problem. Like 2014, he finished strong again but he sucked out of the gate with a miserable April. He was great in May and June. Sucked and got benched in July and August and was great again in September.

April, July, August: 24/162 (.148) 3 doubles 6HR 20RBI .247OBP

May, June, September: 54/229 (.240) 14doubles 18HR 44RBI .345OBP

The hot finish won't fool me again. He's just inconsistent as shite. 3 horrible months, 3 great months. The question is, if you improve the lineup and have more on base guys, can you tolerate Carter? Use him for what he is...a guy that can bring home your high OBP guys with one swing.

#Astros have outrighted RHP Samuel Deduno off the 40-man roster. Following the move, the club now has 36 players on the 40-man roster.

Correa, Springer, Gomez, Rasmus are all very capable of doing that too, so Carter can gtfo.

Also, Deduno:

Trade Carter and put Valbuena/Gonzalez at 1B until they know what they want to do with Reed. Or wait until June when he's called up.

I don't mind the Valbuena/Gonzalez and Lowrie platoon. Then you have to wonder what they do with Duffy. He wasn't called up during a playoff run because he was a number.

We talk about all these guys, yet always leave Duffy out. He was called up before White and Reed and was the PCL Player of the Year.

I would like to see a Duffy/Valbuena platoon at 3B until Moran is ready for his shot. Duffy's MiLB numbers indicate he might just be a lefty masher.

And at this point, I think Reed will get every chance to win 1B in spring training.

Reed winning it and taking over 1B from opening day would be ideal. Hopefully they don't worry about the Super Two game with him
