Championship polo ordered. I look forward to all the trash can comments.

The Astros and Chicago Cubs were in agreement on a trade to send star catcher Willson Contreras to the Astros for starter Jose Urquidy, four sources familiar with the deal told ESPN. The straight-up trade was agreed upon, pending owner approval. That approval never came.
Just read through the article. Crane vetoed the trade at the lobbying of Dusty
quote:
And when Click tried to execute the trade for Contreras -- a pending free agent who is not regarded as a good defensive catcher but would've ably filled the hole at designated hitter that plagued the Astros during the postseason -- another prominent name let his opposition be known: Dusty Baker.
"Much as I like Willson Contreras, Urquidy was one of our best pitchers then," Baker said. "I needed a guy that wasn't going to complain about not playing every day. And this is his [free agent] year. See, that's tough. When you trade for a player in his [free agent] year. Everybody's about numbers and stuff, and I can't blame them, no doubt. But that's not what we needed."
So you can start to see where we've been getting bits and pieces of a rift between Click, Crane and Dusty with Crane and Dusty on one side and click on the other. And it appears it's not Crane ticked off that Click wanted to run things like Tampa and not be aggressive enough. Would seem more like Click is pissed off that his underling is bypassing him and going straight to the owner to lobby against efforts to upgrade the roster.

Bad deal, glad it didn’t happen.

Can Crane really complain? He hired Dusty before he hired Click. We're sort of trapped by Dusty because he's the face of the "re-branding" after the cheating accusations.
-He's been around the league a long time with success
-Hes a black man which is a perfect shield against coastal media
-Celebrities and other media favorites like Dusty
And now he's won a world series doing it "his way", and the players seemed to really like him.
Nobody can question the guy at this stage even if you think a guy like Espada would greatly improve the team function.

It would have been an okay deal... I have to assume that definitely the Vazquez deal and maybe even Mancini don't happen if we had gotten Contreras.
I love Urquidy, I think he's under-rated because he's the #5 on the staff (or #6) but he's still a perfectly capable major league starter that would have started playoff games for almost any other team.
That said, Contreras at DH would have most likely been a big step up from our playoff DH rotation. But, we won anyway, so frick it! Go 'Stros!

After reading the article, I’d be shocked, i think, if Click is back.
Which is wild

On principle I don't like giving up a good controllable starting pitcher for a rental. I'm kind of surprised Click would do that as well considering his background. The value is way out of whack there. Glad it didn't happen

when do we get Dusty’s retirement announcement? he has to want to go out on top right?

I agree, but it would have been trading from a position of strength to fill a weakness.
I'm glad it didn't happen, obviously hindsight makes that really easy to say.

When Brantley asked the hitters to gather in the cage, he intended to offer neither. Brantley was mad enough that hitting coaches Alex Cintron, Troy Snitker and Jason Kanzler, aware of his frustrations, left before the meeting began. Only the players needed to hear what Brantley wanted to say. The Astros, Brantley said, are an extremely good team -- and if something didn't change, they were going to lose the World Series, just as they had to the Washington Nationals in 2019 and the Braves last year. In Game 3, they let a coterie of Phillies pitchers control the tempo and beat them up, he said, and they needed to play their brand of baseball. No more complacency. No more losing.
quote:
"I'm sick of giving sad hugs," Brantley told the team. The response was immediate. "We were all ready to run through a brick wall," Astros first baseman Trey Mancini said. "He's somebody I've admired immensely throughout my career. I mean, the model of consistency. His words carry a ton of weight. It meant a lot to us. It turned the series around."
quote:
"I didn't like how we responded in Game 3," Brantley said four days later as music thumped and champagne corks popped amid the Astros' celebration. "They hit Lance hard, and we did nothing to respond. We didn't get into their bullpen to use their main weapons. We didn't do our job. We made our task harder. So I wanted to let everybody know that if we stuck together, did what we do, played our way, that didn't matter. I wanted to reiterate that. "It was straight from the heart, what I believe, what I was feeling, I went to bed that night thinking about it. I woke up that morning and I just had to get it done. I had to say it." Following the win, Astros players awarded Brantley as player of the game for a game in which he did not play. "That was probably the best speech I've ever been part of," said Altuve, the longest-tenured Astro. "He came to us, he had a little meeting and then we won three in a row."
Sounds like they did it their way

Unc
I wouldn't mind having him back if his shoulder gets right but I don't know that he's an outfielder anymore on his twice repaired shoulder and Yordan is probably never going to be a full time LF.

Of all the impending free agents Brantley is #2 on my list for bringing back after JV.
I would love to bring Mancini back for a full season, but I also don't see it happening.
Vazquez isn't going to sit behind Maldy so he's goner than gone.
Yuli I hope shifts to the dugout, but if not I wouldn't hate having him back as long as accepts a Beltran-esque role.

Anyone here went to the 2017 parade or planning on going tomorrow? Debating if I should check it out.
