I am really surprised to see so many people defend this and Dalton.. but as someone said maybe it's structured a good way.
I remember the talk all this past year and heading into this season was if Andy Dalton would even still be in Cincy after 2014.. I definitely do not have the stats to back up anything, but it seemed like he was somewhat regressing? I believe most wanted to see him play out this final season first.
Dalton is good I guess, but started becoming inconsistent.. it seems to be good is now enough to warrant 100+ million now..

The actual numbers have finally come out.
Looks like the deal is not nearly as bad for the Bengals as it initially looked.

Out of that whole contract, only 17 million is guaranteed.
That's why I laugh when people go full idiot when these contract announcements are made. NFL contracts are the antithesis of NBA and MLB contracts because they're essentially year-to-year contracts with shady numbers games, "bonuses," and guarantees tied to performance.
Everyone went crazy when the Eagles gave Mike Vick his $100 million deal, and he "only" saw probably a third of it.

Even if most of it isn't guaranteed, since there are only about 10-15 guys who can really play NFL QB well at any one time, it is really good to be one of the 20 other guys who can sort of make a passing stab at it.

Because he's not gonna see 100 plus million
Everyone freaks out at the initial big number. This contract is really only worth 22 mil over 2 years, then the bengals could cut him for nothing

What's interesting is how personal the dislike of Dalton seems to be for many people. He's not an elite QB and he's yet to show anything in the playoffs but he is better than average and people rating other QBs with highly questionable resumes ahead of him is obviously just personal preference rather than resume IMO

This.
That $100 million figure has bonuses in it tied to him winning the next six freaking Super Bowls in a row.

Here's a breakdown of the contract:
Dalton gets $17 million now, $22 million through early March
Base value is 6 years, 96 million. Pretty good structure to be honest. Dalton can't become complacent since the Bengals can cut him without too much trouble in a few years. For Dalton, a Super Bowl win (along with 80% of snaps) would get him another 18 million over the course of the contract.
Actually, he just has to win it once:

If in any year he participates in 80-percent of the regular-season snaps and the Bengals get to the divisional round of the playoffs (via wild-card win or bye), he gets another $1 million in each additional year of the deal. If he qualifies at any point for the conference title game (with 80-percent playing time in the regular season), another $500,000 flows into the base value of the deal, for each additional year. If he wins a Super Bowl he won’t be driving off in a Hyundai; Dalton will get another $1.5 million per year for each remaining year of the deal.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying my post, but I would rather have Dalton than either of them. Cam would be next. Not interested in Romo at all. He hasn't been able to win with some decent cowboy teams, why is he so great in your eyes?
Posted on 8/4/14 at 7:41 pm to kywildcatfanone
What decent cowboy teams do you speak of? I can't believe I'm defending romo but he's a much much better QB than Dalton
And what has Dalton won with a legit #1 WR, a legit running game, and a fierce defense?

I would have rather signed PP21 and Richard Sherman for basically the same price and rolled with Gay-J Mccarron at QB.

I wouldn't call the Cincy rush offense "legit" in any means. They have ranked near the middle and bottom of the NFL in YPC
The offense skill positions has been better in Dallas than Cincy IMO....

I'll put it this way: Cowboys only win 5 games per season with Dalton. Cincy wins playoff games with Romo. Dalton would be dead if he had been with the cowboys the last 3 seasons.

So would a lot of QB's their line is horrific....
Romo has had better skill position talent
Romo has had better skill position talent

I think that's because of Romo. Dez is not better than AJ. Gresham would have 100 recs in Ivy League's offense.

Dez, Austin, Witten, Murray
Vs
AJ, Gresham, Law Firm, Hawkins
Gimme the Dallas side all day every day

You forgot Giovanni Bernard
Posted on 8/4/14 at 10:34 pm to tigerpimpbot
Bernard has been there 1 year and was under used, which is why i didn't add Williams for Dallas.
Law Firm has been the #1 back the last 3 years
Austin is gone from Dallas and Williams slides from #3 role to #2, Hawkins is gone and I'm guessing Jones or Sanu moved up.

Chandler Jones is going to destroy them this year. WHY ISN'T IT THE REGULAR SEASON YET???
You Patriot fans are talking like the Dolphins were 3-13 last year and got worse. Chandler Jones didn't destroy them last year, and that was facing Jonathan Martin, Tyson Clabo and 137 year old Bryant McKinnie. He'll be facing Branden Albert now.
And that 100 degree weather is gonna be a bitch for big ole 34 year old Wilfork and his gimp leg.
