Nvm that site is not a reliable source
I may be wrong about it being Cajun. I knew it was French influenced and thought the french influence came from the Cajuns who settled here. But maybe not. Either way, Schools all over the state use it. The Saints and Pelicans use it as well. It's a Louisiana thing.

You sure about that?
Yes, yes I am. Absolutely.

Louisiana State University, LSU, in Baton Rouge celebrates the Cajun influence of the surrounding area by playing on the (Cajun-) French language and has created GEAUX, which is "GO!" as encouragement for its athletic teams.
So LSU invented it?

I was always told growing up that they used it first and LSU stole it...

ULL is always trying to leach off of LSU. First they claim to be the "University of Louisiana" and now they are stealing "Geaux" from Geaux Tigers. We had it first.

See my edit. It wasn't a reliable source and I was wrong about the Cajun part. But it's still ridiculous to think that LSU owns that phrase when it's so embedded in all of Louisiana culture/sports. The fact that the OP even asked the question shows he has no idea about any other louisiana school besides LSU

LSU has a pretty impeccable history when it comes to appropriating things.

The school is located in Baton Rouge (obviously), to act like that school is entitled to a Cajun phrase more so than a school in the middle of Cajun Country is fricking stupid, regardless of where fans are located.
“Entitled to a Cajun Phrase???”
Where do you idiots come up with this nonsense that “Geaux” is a Cajun Phrase? Where did I say anybody was “entitled” to a fricking word? Nobody is. Is Ed Orgeron allowed to be called Coach Eaux? I mean he works in Baton Rouge, by your wonderful logic, he shouldn’t be called that.

Tulane are the yankees. They do not use "geaux" on anything major...
This and the Louisiana thing are completely pointless pissing matches that LSU people don't need to start. They are the #1 state university by a mile, so what gives?

Yeah, because Baton Rouge is more Cajun than Lafayette, give me a fricking break ?
ETA: for the record I think it's fricking stupid regardless of who uses it, but it's absurd to act as if LSU "owns" this term, as it's clearly Cajun influenced, and Baton Rouge isn't very Cajun.
It's pretty stupid to pretend that LSU is limited to Baton Rouge.
GEAUX clearly is a Louisiana as a whole thing, and LSU is clearly the only school who can claim a significant fanbase outside of the immediate area of it's campus.
Suck it, Lafayette losers.

quote:Can you read? I said "more entitled". As in LSU fans are saying that they are more entitled to use a phrase than UL. Not a single UL fan said anything about LSU using the phrase, it was a butthurt LSU fan that started this thread. For people who claim that they don't care about UL at all, there are plenty of butthurt LSU fans who create threads about them

Geaux is a bastardization of the word "Go" with a french flair

Yeah, you missed my entire point.
I'm not debating about what's more cajun. I don't care about who is more cajun. I didn't even go to school in Louisiana. All I'm saying is that out of everything you can use for a Louisiana based college, why use the one word that another school is nationally recognized for using. Really not a big deal
