Could technology work its way into the NFL enough to reduce/remove refs?

Had me thinking this morning with all of the chip in the ball type ideas. I think you'd probably need one main ref just for the sake of having one, but, let's say you installed the following. How far away would we still be?

Chip in ball allowing automatic tracking for 1st downs, touchdowns, made/missed FGs
AFL like walls removing in/out of bounds controversies
Ball turns red/signal given when forward progress is stopped longer than 2-3 seconds

Biggest issues I see remaining would be infractions like pass interference and holding, etc. but that could be delegated to the lone ref. Feels like that would reduce a ton of the subjective calls and help them focus on ones that are generally controversial already.

I don’t know about all that shite

But one thing I’ve thought of for a while, and it’s a drum LeBatard always bangs, is the age/fitness of these refs.

It seems ridiculous to have middle aged to old men trying to police a game that’s moving so fast. Having them run down the sideline or spot things 30 yards away seems impossible.

I wonder if they’d be better off not being on the field but watching camera feeds of dedicated areas on the field.

Of all the issues I see with this OP, this one actually stood out the most. You expect one guy to watch 22 guys each play and not miss any calls?

... uh.. the back judge is 25 - 30 yards off the ball.. deep wings are 25....

having to move 30 yards to view a play or what you are supposed to be looking at is only a small fraction of plays.

heck of a cushion.....

angle of view you have on the ground is hard to

I don't know if those ideas would ever REPLACE refs but it would be great tools to HELP them.

If refs do their job correctly, the majority of them are "not" looking at the ball, unless it comes into their "zone".

Is this an LSU ref melt or Saints ref melt?

The way they call pass interference needs to be changed. Make it a maximum 30 second review, if it takes more than 30 sec. stay with the call.

P I in the NFL is the worst called penalty in all of the professional sports.

If we get to a level of tech that we are using robots and computers to call the game it won't be long until said robots decide to kill us all.
