It’s cool, man.

I was born in the suburbs in 1972 and worked downtown for about five years around the turn of the century. The improvement there stunned me when I was downtown with family for a show about three years ago. But the city considered as a whole is in terrible shape. Downtown has been nicely redeveloped so well off whites from the suburbs (and middle class blacks as well, who have fled the city in large numbers over the past two decades) have an urban scene to take in.

Meanwhile, this is a neighborhood on the north side (City Airport is just outside the screenshot, top right). Vast stretches of urban prairie as you would expect in a place that’s lost about two-thirds of its population since 1950.

Went there in the summer of 2005. I’m glad to hear that it’s improved since then. It wasn’t “bad” two decades ago but I’ve also heard that it is an area that is much better now. After the game I bought a CD from a street musician. An elderly black dude with an acoustic guitar singing the blues. I lost that CD in one of my moves and can’t recall the guy’s name but it was good stuff.

That's in the Lake St Clair area, just west of Grosse Pointe. It's a crappy area, as is the area outside of downtown (except the Riverfront area and Aretha Franklin Ampihtheater area). I stayed with a friend who lived Down River in the Lincoln Park/Allen Park area, but he grew up in the South End of Dearborn. Of course, South End is now almost completely Middle Eastern, but the majority of them seem like nice people.

Downtown is nice and yes you can walk to the arenas from a downtown hotel, and you can take the People Mover which is the downtown monorail. I've been on it. There's a lot of police on the monorail so you are safe.

Also you can walk to Greektown. It has great Greek food. If you like Greek food Greektown is awesome and there's casinos in Detroit that are nice.
