Read this on Field of Schemes last week. One of the worst stadium deals in history maybe ever. Public didn’t even vote on it

You should be happy. A less educated population is easier to control.

Is there some other service that lets users rent books for free that I don't know about?

Just fork out the money for Amazon prime and books are included.

Pay $100/year for a selection that is probably like 3% of what is available at the local library that I already pay for with taxes.

Come on, man.

Well you aren't paying 100 bucks a year for just books.

But yea?

I don't see an issue with that?

Most the books I wanna read are on that.

Along with all the movie stuff, free shipping etc.

Amazon is great.

$100 a year is also pretty cheap

I get that but libraries are likely on their way out just like newspapers. Libraries will not go away completely, but will become an online database.

It costs extra to get Kindle Unlimited.

The free books are all older books that are in the public domain, like Moby Dick and War & Peace. Mostly the only people who want to read them are people who have to for a grade.

I understand the sentiment, but libraries are antiquated. When we were kids (assuming you are in your mid-30's or older) you had to go to the library to research reports, projects, etc. for school. Today's kids have that all available to them 24/7 on their iPads. Also, it's never been easier or cheaper to obtain reading material. You can get many books cheaply uploaded directly on your tablet. Or, you can just order the hard copy and have it to your home in 2 days.

Don't get me wrong. I think the libraries do their best to stay relevant and change with the times. At least in my area there are a lot of nice programs for young kids (mine like going). But many kids would just rather play online than go to a library. And if they want information, they can just Google it.

I'm not saying it's "right" to close libraries to fund baseball teams. But in the grand scheme of things, I suspect one makes a LOT more money for the the county than the other.

Apparently not as they are in debt. Plus the role of county is not to make money

Libraries aren't really that antiquated. Maybe in some ways, but not overall.

The last few years have seen a decrease in e-book sales with an increase in hard copy sales, with younger people preferring physical books.
