Nate Oats turned down the head coaching job at Duke already?

Mkay

He hasn't been offered the Duke job. So no, he hasn't turned it down. I wouldn't expect it to be offered to him either if K does retire. He just signed an extension that will pay him over $3M per year and raised his buyout to north of $12M. I'd be a little surprised if someone was willing to pay that buyout for him after only two years of P5 experience. Oats seems more than happy with his current situation anyway. I think we are still a few years away from really having to worry about Oats making the jump to another job. Based off of his comments in the past, there aren't very many college jobs out there that I am overly worried about having to compete with to keep him.

quote:

“I was happy Greg extended me and I like it in Alabama a lot,” Oats said. “I like working with Greg, I like working with the staff we have. I want to continue to build this thing, so I didn’t mind that he pretty much took me out of contention for a lot of those jobs that maybe my name came up, because I really don’t want to move. I’ve got three young girls that are — I’ve got a daughter going into her senior year of high school, an 11-year-old and an 8-year-old. My family likes it there, we’d like to be there a long time, we’d like to build it. I just think if we keep getting better, we can kind of eliminate a lot of those distractions as you got close to the end of the year. Now, we can just focus on recruiting and building this program.”

Tony Bennett would be a good fit

If I'm Duke promoting from within or someone with ties would be a lazy hire

You can get whoever you want

I agree.

But if Duke wanted him, they'd fart out that kind of money without blinking and Oats would drop everything and come. It's Duke basketball. It's like being offered the Alabama football job.

I don't think Duke will take that big of a risk though, so we're in agreement.

I think there is a good chance that would happen, but Oats has also said multiple times that he prefers coaching basketball at a school where basketball isn't the priority sport. Being at a school like Alabama allows him the freedom to not be front and center with the media all the time and gives him more time to focus on coaching, recruiting and building his program in the shadows of the Saban and the football program.

If a school like Duke came after him and he got the itch, it would be really difficult to turn that opportunity down though.

Would they just hire a Coach K assistant to try and keep the train moving?

seems like the train hasn't been moving so well lately

Yea Im hoping they go with a more proven guy. That being said Oats brief track record is pretty damn impressive. If you told me that in 5 years he'll be considered a top 3 coach in CBB, Id believe it.

-Hes won 4 of the 5 conference tournaments that hes coached in

-3 Regular Season conference championships in 6 years as a head coach

-4 NCAA Tournament Appearances in 6 years as a head coach

-Great Recruiter

-Took Alabama from perennial bubble rider to the #5 overall seed in just 2 years

He may be considering retirement...who knows. But Baldwin's signing to play at UWM isn't a sign of something to come. He's going to play for his dad who is the HC there. Most have felt for a while that was where he would end up.

Just general hubbub on some basketball forums. It just feels like it's come up more since Williams retired, understandably.

I'm not surprised it's ratcheting up today with Baldwin staying home, but I think that has a lot less to do with a potential Coach K retirement and more about him staying home.

I don't see him bailing on Duke at this point in the off-season. I haven't seen anyone of significance mention it.

Suppose that he retired

I don't want to be his replacement out of the gate. Let someone else be the Bill Guthridge or Matt Dougherty.

Fans and boosters need a reset before they allow a new coach to make over the program in his image. That probably requires a few years in the wilderness.

IMO the right coach could keep up the momentum. But it'd take someone with experience and can deal with the pressure at Duke. And accepting that pressure will be sky high after someone like Coach K.

Joe B. Hall is one of the few that could follow a legend and even he doesn't get the credit he deserves for what he did after Rupp here in Kentucky.

If I was all these old school coaches I would retire. Wouldn’t want to deal with these kids anymore. This generation sucks. Nothing they can do anymore.
