A 4 year "pre-engineering" degree?

You earn the BS pre-engineering in 2-3 years. Then another 2 years at Clemson or Ga. Tech.

It’s basically a BS in Physics track at Furman. That you stop short of the Physics degree and transfer to one of the aforementioned schools.

A lot of small schools have these joint degrees with bigger schools. In most cases I think its dumb and think the person should just go to the big school in the first place, but in this kids case I can see where getting to play for Furman made it worth it.

unless it is a lot cheaper and the first 2 years of classes are general anyway

Hell at the smaller school you might actually see the prof more often

Sure, but both your points are extremely likely to be invalid here. Its doubtful Furman is cheaper than Clemson first of all, secondly engineering generally involves a lot of professor interaction.

As said, its made sense here because the guy wanted to play QB.

Remember when Clemson was on probation and South Carolina lost to furman

Clemson had bumper stickers "I'd rather be on probation than lose to furman"

Furman is a private school and cost way more to attend than Clemson. Unless he had scholarships and grants to pay majority of the costs, it makes no sense to start at a school like Furman for 2 years and then transfer to school that is cheaper.
