Chris Simms QB rankings for the 2023 draft

T5- Will Levis
His 10 or 15 best throws are up there with anyone. Laser show. Problem is those are too few and far between. Ball placement and mechanics and decision-making get a little all over the place.
quote:
T5- Dorian Thompson-Robinson
Size and the body are a little scary, I get it. But think he should be getting more hype. Knows the position and has a ton of reps. And has the traits to go with it. Arm is high-level.
quote:
4- Anthony Richardson
Highest ceiling of any QB in this class, and probably the lowest floor. But not as raw as you might think. Film is a little all over the place - wow plays, head-scratching throws, it’s all there. Designed run game is gonna be a real thing with this kid.
quote:
3- Hendon Hooker
Saw tons of high-level throws down the field and outside the numbers. His ability to see and throw over the line should translate well. Seems unaffected by the rush in his face. Wish he was a little more liberal with his releases and angles like Bryce is.
quote:
2- Bryce Young
He’s a natural at the position. Brain is on another level in terms of decision-making. And he’s super slick – tons of wow releases. Really knows how to move within the pocket too.
Arm is good, but not on the level as Stroud.
Big question with Bryce Young: with people around him, is he gonna be able to make consistent power throws down the field or into tight windows? And obviously with his size, how will be take NFL hits?
quote:
1- C.J. Stroud
Blown away by the film. Makes tons of powerful, pinpoint, game-changing throws. Over and over it’s 15-30 yard throws on the money. Decision-making is not only awesome, but aggressive too.
More movement and improv than he gets credit for.

Is Simms the same guy that crowned Zach Wilson?

This happens when you're not good enough to go to the league but you play for a school that can't get better options

DTR taking NFL snaps would result in world class comedy.

Stroud is going to be a fantastic pro QB

Young impressed me more in college than Tua. He has great feel for the game. Unfortunately, I can see why his size is a concern for NFL teams.
At his best, Richardson is Cam Newton. However, Cam actually hit that peak in college whereas Richardson never did. Plus, for as good as peak Cam was for Carolina, he was basically done by age 30 with the physical beating he took. It is not uncommon now to see great QBs play well deep into their 30's. Even if Richardson hits his ceiling how long will it last?
Best case scenario, Levis is Josh Allen or Big Ben. Physical specimens that had great moments in college, but were never dominant because they played on inferior teams. The hope is that once he gets to the NFL and the talent is more evenly distributed he can shine. Still, for every Josh Allen NFL history is riddled with big size/big arm QBs that never did anything as pros.
With Hooker the question becomes: "is he a guy like Joe Burrow that was always pretty good but needed the right situation to show it?" Or is he a guy who had a ton of college experience who had the good sense to find himself in a QB friendly offense in college?" The answer is probably somewhere in between. Thus, I don't think he's someone I take early in the draft.
Outside of Burrow, the track record for OSU QBs isn't great (and you can say Burrow wasn't great at OSU). Still, knowing there is rarely sure thing when drafting a QB, I think Stroud skillset probably provides the lowest risk

It is also worth noting that he recorded an entire feature video for Bleacher Report ahead of the 2017 NFL Draft touting Patrick Mahomes as the most special talent in the draft. That wasn't necessarily an unpopular opinion at the time; the questions about Mahomes entering the draft that year was not about his talent but if he could harness it effectively.
quote:
2018 was Simms' most impressive act. In a draft where Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold were touted as the best prospects available, and were the first two quarterbacks picked, Simms had Lamar Jackson as his top QB in the draft, followed by Josh Allen, with Mayfield third. Lest we forget, the lead-up to that draft was rife with takes about how Jackson would be better off playing a different position, and he won MVP as a quarterback two years later. Allen is a similarly electrifying talent who has led his team to the playoffs two out of three years as a starter. Mayfield is coming around, but as of now definitely belongs behind those two, and Simms was ahead of the curve.
quote:
Over the last three years, Simms has been pretty spot-on with his draft analysis. Last year, he had Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert as his top two prospects. Not nearly as bold a ranking as the one above, but he was still right. In 2019, which is looking like quite a disastrous QB draft, he had Kyler Murray at No. 1 followed by Drew Lock. The returns are still early, but both of those guys look better than Dwayne Haskins or Ryan Finley

You're underrating Kentucky. The two UGA games and UT this year were the only times UK had an inferior team during his entire UK career. Florida sucked, LSU sucked when UK played them, UK matched Ole Miss fine until Levis would have a bad TO in the red zone.

1. Zach Wilson, BYU
Simms: "My baseline for Wilson is Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. That's where it starts. It is an unbelievably quick release. It's the ability to throw the ball any which way he wants -- side arm, over the top, jumping in air, two feet off the ground, throwing between a guard and a tackle 25 yards down the middle. The arm strength is phenomenal. He can throw 40-yard lasers into a Cover 2 hole. He can throw 60-, 70-yard-bomb posts down the middle and he doesn't need to get his hole body into it. I was blown away."
Like everybody he's right sometimes and wrong sometimes.

He's not wrong about the talent, Wilson's problem is between the ears. He's immature, and doesn't put the work in to succeed.

He’s the same age as Bennett. So he was an older mature guy playing against kids.
At least that’s how the MSB views it.

Simms was SUPER high on the A&M QB from a couple years back...Kellen Mond

What I do not see much written about is Richardson may be a big dude, but he is quite fragile- you hit him hard early on a run, he stops running and even his passing is out of sorts. He may have the body to absorb more hits, but when they come, they seem to affect his game more.
Also Hooker didn't look all that cool in the face of a blitz in the UGA games, both this year and last year.

Yeah makes him liking DTR make sense. Both guys with some tools that started for 4 years and improved as they went along. Career backups is probably the ceiling on both.
