At this point, we better just keep KB and Willson and hope health of the talent can get you where you want to go.

There's no point in trading two of your best players.

I don't think we are going to have enough pitching even if we stay healthy.

I agree. Only shot would be Adbert grabbing the 5th spot and doing well while the bargain bin pen outperforms expectations.

Don’t like Castellanos leaving in FA.

I think Happ will look more like his rookie year. He was good in limited ABs. Schwarber is coming off a good year, KB was great, Rizzo is Rizzo and Baez is Baez. When J-Hey was not batting leadoff he was really really good. Contreras is one of the best bats behind the plate. Overall this teams walks a lot and hits a lot of HRs which is a good formula for a good offense. Starters are kinda eh but a lot of veterans. Darvish was fantastic in the 2nd half. Hendricks was good. Bullpen is iffy but I think Kimbrel will come back. Compete for NLC probably end up in WC game.

There’s still a lot of swing and miss in the lineup though. The obp over the last few years has been good, but they can’t do anything with the base runners.

Piss poor at situational hitting. I wouldn't mind trading Schwarbs for pitching.

Castellanos was the best guy at the plate for the Cubs as soon as he put on the jersey last season.

The doom and gloom is a bit premature. There’s still enough talent to win the central

I agree with this. Just feel like they've disappointed the past two years and didn't add any players that would create any optimism with fans. Hopefully the switch from Maddon to Ross will shake things up enough to see something closer to 2015-2017.

Welcome aboard Jeremy Jeffress.

Nothing exciting but a decent reclamation project

i assume theyll be printing money once the new tv deal/Marquee network is situated.

Listening to podcasts from guys who cover the team in Chicago, apparently they aren't going to make as much as they thought off the Marquee network, at least this year anyway. Also, they apparently went way over budget on the bullshite they're building around the stadium (hotel, restaurants, etc.)...like 100% over budget (more than double). I don't think this situation is acceptable, but I'm not sure you can put all of the blame on Ricketts. I do think he blindsided Theo last year with his "we're out of money" comment because Theo was talking about signing "generational talents" 2 offseasons ago, and they didn't end up even being in any meaningful discussions for big time free agents. However, I can also see that Ricketts gave Theo the 2nd largest payroll in baseball last year, and Theo gave him a 3rd place finish.

The Bryant service time grievance is apparently a really big deal to MLB. It's one of the issues at the center of the next CBA negotiations. That could be one of the reasons the arbitrator is taking his sweet arse time to make a decision, even though almost no one expects Bryant to win. The problem is that the Cubs can't event entertain trade offers for Bryant until they know if he'll be under control for 1 or 2 more years. I think it's silly to trade him regardless because you aren't getting 6 WAR per season back in return. I'd rather let him walk for nothing and try to win in this window than get a bunch of prospects and waste more prime years of Rizzo, Baez, Hendricks, Contreras, etc.

He has been AWFUL with anyone on base the last 3 years (so has the whole lineup), I’m fine with shaking things up and doing something drastic. I just don’t trust Theo to do it, he’s been awful.

Strop to the Reds, too.

Any chance the Cubs are sitting out this year to get under the luxury tax and they'll spend next year? Or is that just what Ricketts wants fans to think?

Several in the Chicago media think that's exactly what they're doing. Sort of a soft reset like the Yankees did in 2016. Something tells me Ricketts won't be spending $350M on a starting pitcher anytime soon though.

We need to get back to actual baseball talk instead of this Astros bullshite. Here's some good news.
quote:

Kris Bryant recently reiterated his affection for the Cubs organization. He also noted it’d be nice “to be in the loop a little bit” if indeed the team is holding trade talks that involve him.

That seems to have taken place in a recent chat with president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, as Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Bryant says he was left with the impression he’ll be in a Cubs uniform for the entirety of the coming season.

Unsurprisingly, Bryant wasn’t given an unqualified assurance that he wouldn’t be traded. But GM Jed Hoyer acknowledged that Bryant had left with the right takeaway, saying it’s “certainly the expectation” that the star will remain in Chicago for the coming season.

KB also volunteered to bat leadoff too. I like the idea if he can cut down on the strikeouts now that he's fully healthy.
