Been hearing this for a few days – it now seems like it’s a done deal. Reports, including one from Tarek Fattal of the L.A. Daily News, are now surfacing that Trent Johnson is no longer the head men’s basketball at Cal State Northridge. Johnson has gone 14-48 (.226) in two seasons since taking over for Mark Gottfried. He served as the interim head coach in 2021-22, before having the interim tag removed prior to this past season. He has also been the head coach at LSU, Stanford, Nevada, and TCU, and owns a 290-313 (.481) career mark. CSUN has had back-to-back 7-win seasons.

It was kinda BS that his first year LSU got an 8 seed after winning the SEC and got paired with UNC the #1 overall seed in the 2nd round. We gave UNC and Hansbrough their toughest game of the tournament at least but I think that LSU team could have gone deeper in the tourney had the committee not fricked us.

Records for LSU basketball head coaches after leaving LSU:

Frank Truitt: 74-121
Press Maravich: 12-51
Dale Brown: n/a
John Brady: 121-128
Trent Johnson: 64-126
Johnny Jones: 90-73
Will Wade: TBD

LSU hiring Trent after he brought down the perennial top 10 Stanford program was terrible, but TCU “stealing” him from us was one of the worst coaching hires of all time.

That's actually hilarious that he took over for Gottfried.

Northridge out here trying any SEC trash coach they can find.

Quite a career arch for Johnson. Good at Nevada. Maybe better at Stanford. Wins the SEC in year one at LSU...then takes a career nose dive. He somehow convinces a worse TCU program to hire him even though he had sucked at LSU for 3 years. Gets fired. Goes back to being an assistant coach before becoming a HC at a school no one outside of Northridge CA knows exists. Gets fired after two years.

And honestly, ON PAPER at the time he was hired, he may have been the best HC LSU ever hired.

Brown was a largely unknown assistant coach when LSU hired him.

Brady was at Samford and had never reached the NCAAT

Jones was decent at North Texas, but not remarkable.

Wade had a couple of short stays in the NCAAT with VCU.

Johnson was the WAC COY and took Nevada to the Sweet 16. He was the Pac 10 COY and took Stanford to the Sweet 16. I was confident we had a new "basketball" AD (Alleva) and good HC (Johnson) in 2008. Moreso in 2009 after LSU won the SEC. Boy was that wrong!!!

Stanford was a legit national power when Johnson took over for Mike Montgomery. They had won at least 1 tournament game in each of the previous 10 seasons. 30-2 the year before.

Trent takes over and they don't reach 20 wins nor have a tournament win til his 4th year. The good season he had in his 4th year was due to the Lopez twins, who were never going anywhere but Stanford.

It was not a good hire despite what this board said at the time.

In fairness to Alleva (I know) but hadn’t he literally just been hired, like hadn’t even moved to BR yet, when he had to make this hire?

That's with the the benefit of hindsight.

At that time LSU was a couple of years removed from a Final Four appearance. But they were a last place team in 2007 and slightly better in 2008.

IIRC, some of the names being thrown around at that time were Tim Floyd, Travis Ford, Anthony Grant, Oliver Purnell, Johnny Jones, and Tony Bennett. Hindsight being 20/20, Bennett would have been a HR hire. But at that point in time you could make the argument Johnson was the more accomplished coach than any on the list. It definitely looked like it at the end of his first season when LSU won the SEC by 3 games. And but for getting a questionable 8 seed which put them head to head with the eventual champion, UNC, that team could have made it to at least the Sweet 16...which would have been the 3rd school Johnson took that far.

Clearly it didn't work out. But to say at the time it was obviously a "bad" hire is wrong. That's not how it was viewed.

I did not think it was a good hire right away. The guy took down Stanford and a few weeks before he was hired did one of the dumbest things I’ve seen a coach do by getting kicked out of a NCAA tournament game.

I do remember wanting Travis Ford or Anthony Grant though. No telling how good they would have done at LSU.

Most of the rant wanted Grant

I forget which poster it was (tiger josh probably) that called his office at vcu and spoke to his secretary and posted about it on the rant

Considering both were average to decent at Oklahoma St and Alabama, respectively, probably about the same at LSU. Ford did take OSU to the NCAA Tournament multiple times. But they were a relative mainstay in the tournament when he got the job and a better program than LSU. Grant didn't do much at Alabama.

OSU hadn’t been to the tournament in the 3 seasons prior to Ford getting there. He took them in 5 of his 1st 7 seasons.

Grant had 3 straight season of 21+ wins at Alabama. LSU hasn’t had 3 straight seasons of 20+ wins since the early 90s.

Both would have done fine at LSU.

Trent was a nice guy but he couldn’t recruit a crackhead to a crack house.
