Watched it. I was almost 12 and already a hockey fan after going to a WHA Birmingham Bulls game. Eric Heiden and the hockey game inspired me to teach myself to ice skate (at the Galleria rink in Houston).
I re-watched Miracle on a flight a couple days ago, and watched the recent Netflix documentary. I can’t remember which player said it, but he said that to this day he never tires of people bringing that game up and listening to fans tell him how much that game meant to me. Hell, I could say that game eventually led to me being an NHL season ticket holder even though I’ve never lived outside the south or ever played hockey.

First time I ever went ice skating was at the Galleria.
Heiden was a beast.

Growing up in the south, Hockey is a big sport. I still don't know all the rules but it's a great sport.

No doubt. That gold meant something to the cold war generation. Few remember we beat Finland for the gold.
Yep The team could have easily let down after beating the USSR. Though Finland dropped out of the Medal with the loss. Russia would have won the Gold if the US had lost or tied. With a loss, the US would have gotten the Bronze, with a tie, I think they still win Gold based on head-to-head with Russia. This was pre-OT rules, so ties happened fairly often.

Indeed. The thighs on that dude, he looked like he could squat a limousine.

The Russians were the 17-1 New England Patriots.

They were down to Finland and Herb Brooks (who really didnt curse) told them during the break if they lost they would take it to their fricking graves.

I was 9. Was always wondering when the nukes would drop. I thought every plane that I heard flying overhead and out of sight might be a missle. Soviets were the boogeymen. I watched that game and can’t recall a time since that I was so proud, happy, elated, etc..
I wasn’t even a hockey fan but it was America vs. The Soviet Union and I kept hearing we had no chance. I remember the last 10 minutes of that game being anxiety and rapid heart rate for me. Just hold on! Just hold on! I will never forget the final seconds. The crowd chanting, the flags, Michael’s forever call with 6 seconds left.

I was 8. Now, I'm talking about the USSR game, not the Gold medal game. My father told me we really needed to watch the hockey game that night. Remember, it was played at 4 CST and played on ABC via tape delay at 7:30 CST. I think he knew we won and wanted us all to watch together. I remember pumping my fist in the air while lying on the couch in our old living room when Al Michaels said his famous "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!". Still get chills and tear up thinking about it. Watched the gold medal game on tape delay in prime time on Sunday night, but knew the result beforehand this time.

I remember watching it in my grandmother’s living room on her 19 inch console TV. The kind with the knobs you turned to change the channel.
Man… I would do anything to spend another day in her living room watching the Olympics. Time is brutal. But days like today last forever!

I was 10, and was so nervous the entire game. I remember I ate two entire bags (large) of Tom's Jalapeno chips during the game. It was the greatest sporting event I ever watched and can remember it like it was yesterday.
from Dirk Dawgler's post above, my sentiments EXACTLY !

My dad says I was in the room at the time. So, yes.
I was four, though. I don’t remember it.

Outstanding post. We all hated Russia and that was a good thing. The thought united all Americans.

Great story. It was the best of times.

I was 13. A kid from south I knew nothing about Hockey. No idea about icing or what penalty box was. But I knew it was the good guys vs bad guys. Sat in floor and watched it on a 24 TV. To this day I believe its the most proud of a win ive ever watched.

I was 10. My parents let me skip church to watch it…which never happened. Will never forget Eruzione’s goal and Al Michaels call at the end

I watched miracle last night if that counts.
