well, it would be nice if he brought something else to the team when he isn't hitting. Even if it would just be making routine plays and hustling. Then you could live with his futility.

as for redeeming...2014. Highest OPS of his career. That's pretty redeeming. I don't' think anyone would argue that he's not having a tough year so far. Much like he did in 2013.

His trade value...that's redeeming.

His walk off wins. Those are redeeming.

so nothing specific that he does consistently on the field, eh?

are you counting his 3rd inning RBI as the game winning hit like the other guy?

My feelings on Castro are pretty simple.

Is Russell at SS an upgrade defensively over Castro? YES

Is the bat we replace Castro with an upgrade? Most likely

Will we get an asset or two for trading him? YES

Can thsee pro-Castro peeps agree on these 3 things? If so, can we all cheer together that he plays out his arse the next month and ups his trade value? ??

Imagine if castro's contract wasn't reasonable.

It also kind of reminds me of the way Jaque Jones was treated (minus the racism stuff, hopefully).

Castro deserves criticism, no doubt, but as much as we unnecessarily praised tony campana or ryan theriot, his criticism should also be grounded.

2014 didn't happen on the field? It's a matter of perspective. I think he can get back to that production because he's done it in the past and it wasn't a huge anomaly. If you don't then yea, nothing left but to move on...hopefully for fair trade value which i think is fairly high.

Nope...but i did like his play against doizer.

For sure on Russell and trading

Iffy on the upgrade at 2B

Don't we all cheer for him every day. There aren't people out there hoping he fails, right?

if you want to talk perspective, you have to use more than just 2014, dont you?. Didn't 2010-2013 happen too? His 2015 is much more inline with those seasons than his outlier 2014.

I understand getting hot and cold at the dish, but for a SS to be so inconsistent/lazy/indifferent in the field is not common or conducive to winning. .

I cheer for him everyday and I view him as a long term member of this team until the Cubs prove me otherwise. Do I want him traded? Only if what the Cubs can replace him with makes them better.

That's a very simpleton thing to say, I know. I do think the Cubs have a situation on their hands defensively with Castro not really being better than Russell, but I will concede that I feel like Castro is about above league average defensively. If the numbers say otherwise, then so be it.

Huh? the only one of those years that is unacceptable is 2013.

Hell he received MVP votes in 2011.

I wish his season was more inline with those. 3.0 or 3.4 WAR would do nicely.

I thought we were talking about his consistently bad defense.

I'm not. I'm talking about the player as a whole.

But I'd happily take the defensive WAR from 2012.

Not sure what to say here. His RBI yesterday is considered a game winning RBI by definition and every baseball person in the world considers that a game winning RBI. We can talk about every other statistic/sabermetric known to man, but then we are going to try and deny that that was a game winning RBI by definition? Good stuff.

Let's just keep comparing his slugging percentage to Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber. I mean they r rookieezzz!!11!

The butt hurt from Lester in this thread is so amazing.

I know what a game winning RBI is, but you were trying to paint him as this clutch player yesterday. Hitting a sac fly in the 3rd inning of a scoreless game doesn't exactly jive with his other walk off hits.

btw, why did you change your name?

Not all that reasonable either. He'd be more marketable with 2 years left on that deal.

Oh ok, so you know that yesterday was a game winning RBI then.

I said nothing more than he had another game winning RBI which gives him 4 in the last 10 days. That is fact. Much more fact than "he doesn't hustle and looks lackadaisical."

Well no - it wasn't a walk-off or even a hit for that matter. But it was a game winning RBI. His 4th such RBI in the last 10 days. Glad we could have this discussion.
