It'll go away eventually but will take longer than 2 years.
I'd also expect conference championship games to go away en mass all across college football at once.

Wrong again, Jimbo. Conference championship games are going the way of the dinosaur. Only the CFP matters now.

I believe a game will still be played, but it will be a play in game.
The 24 team model only works if that's how it's done.

Expanded playoffs will kill any interest in the regular season. The goal should be to NOT be like the NBA or MLB that nobody pays attention too outside of the playoffs

I totally understand SEC fans whining about this new era because they owned the old era of a small cabal of people picking their teams. But, even SEC fans need to take off your homer goggles and see that the sport is GROWING in interest all while you whine and wish for 1998 again.
And for the poster who said a playoff would kill the regular season - did you not see packed stadiums last season for meaningless games? Fans are stupid. How much money was spent for 70,000 to attend the Ohio St/Texas game or the Bama/FSU game let alone the regular season conference games. There is absolutely no evidence that a playoff kills interest in the regular season. It’s just something dumb people say because they yearn for the old days.
Now, I do agree that fans shouldn’t attend and spend their money if their team is guaranteed a playoff spot but I’ve long ago given up believing the common SEC fan is smart. I’ve seen them show up in huge numbers for total beat down games because college football is their life. I’m glad they keep that money pipeline going all while they complain about what they are paying for. And the SEC fans will keep doing it. Bama/LSU will be sold out. Bama/Auburn will be sold out. UF/UGA will be sold out. And then teams whose fans are smarter than to waste hundreds or thousands on meaningless games will be made fun of by these same SEC fans. It’s just comical.

Not if the viewership remains significantly higher than first round playoff games. SEC and BIG 10 championship games had 16 and 18 MM viewers respectively last year.
First Round playoffs avg 9 MM viewers per game.
Viewership is the only variable that matters in this equation regardless of what makes sense.

Are you sure about that . . .

It seems to me 2x as many people care about watching a playoff game vs a regular season.

Some people don’t want to admit this, but you’re right. College football’s weak point has always been the postseason. When someone says “college football” what do you think of? Probably not a Monday night national championship in a sterile, corporate NFL stadium. You think of October Saturdays in Tiger Stadium, The Swamp, Neyland, Kyle Field, the Big House. The White Out. The Iron Bowl. The Game. The U and the old Orange Bowl stadium.
The NFL will always do the postseason better than college football. And I think a lot of CFB fans are okay with that. The most iconic postseason game in CFB isn’t the Monday night natty…it’s a (formerly) exhibition game played on New Year’s Day in Southern California.

You realize you're comparing apples to oranges right?

I apologize. I thought we were talking about college football and not the NFL.

Except I'm not. It's imperical evidence of a ratio of fans interest of the same sport and comparing their interest regular season vs playoff. It would be apples to oranges if I compared NFL playoff viewership to College Football Playoff viewership but not comparing ratios within the same group.

Except, you are.
Playoff games are played one at a time, there are no conflicts.
Regular season games sometimes have 10 games on at a time.
Even if they account for that by going by channel and not game, there are still competing games on Fox and CBS.
Apples to Oranges

You can’t convince him because he’ll never admit that’s a bad example. As you pointed out - regular season games are often blacked with multiple games on at the same time. You’d have to be at a sports book to watch all the games. As you pointed out, playoff games are ALL on national TV by themselves.

You're absolutely correct there should be no expectation that as college football tries to mimic the NFL there will be zero correlation or predictability in how fans behavior will change over time.

Which is why I included Sun night game and Thurs night games in my original post. Only game on TV at that time. Still significantly less viewership of a marquee match that is the only game being played during that time slot. Here it is for you again:

Then explain Thur night, Sun night, and Mon night viewership compared to NFL playoffs.
I only entered this conversation because you said "THERE IS NO EVIDENCE". Honestly, I could not care less what your opinion is and whether or not your prediction will be right or wrong. Just don't say "there is no evidence" to predict what will happen when truly there is evidence. Does it become true? Only time will tell.

I am talking about college football. You suddenly out of nowhere brought up the NFL.
There is no evidence that the college football regular has ever been impacted by having a playoff. All the big games are sold out and watched. I was on this board saying the Texas-Ohio St game and FSU-Bama were worthless games last year and only fools would spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to attend. And yet 70,000 did just that. Heck, even the SECCG was sold out and both those teams fanbases knew their teams were in the playoffs regardless of that game and they still parted with their money. College fans are STUPID but that’s because loyalty is defined differently in the pros and college sports.

I’ll never regret being vehemently against changing away from the 1998-2013 BCS model.
It really is incredible how much better of a product it was than this. It was a true champion.

never even liked the 4 team playoff.
Correct, very rarely there were ever 4 teams with a legit shot at winning it. I believe the average margin of victory in the semis was like 21 and the average margin of victory in the CG was like 14. *insert fart noise*
