From what I remember the ACC essentially had no choice. The Tobacco Road schools didn't want Louisville for academic reasons. They wanted UConn but the football schools (FSU and Clemson) wanted Louisville.

They had to replace Maryland with Louisville (or WVU if they had been available) to keep FSU and Clemson from potentially leaving for the Big 12. It was a very tumultuous time for the ACC and Louisville benefitted.

Louisville would probably not getting invited today. It's academic anyway because if the Big 12 collapses WVU probably ends up in the ACC. WVU is a natural cultural fit in terms of geography and rivalries (established rivalries with VT, Pitt and Miami).

A friend of mine is a WVU fan, that's why I know the situation pretty well. He even told me that there are more WVU alumni in Charlotte than there are in WV. It's one of the fan bases where a big part of the alumni base is far away from the actual university.

I think the geography thing does hurt WVU, especially in football. A lot of fans can't really make any of those road games. Plus when WVU went to the Big 12 it essentially cut off their connection with Florida recruits. Some of those Florida recruits were a big reason they had a good period between 2005 and 2012.

Our FL pipeline for players didn’t stop when we moved to the Big 12

It’s still going, with a new coach it will take a year or so to get it back

Agreed, the Big 12 has some of the worst road trips. I mean who really cares about going to Manhattan, KS, Stillwater, OK, Lubbock, TX or Ames, IA? Nothing like SEC or even some ACC road trips.

Texas, TCU and WVU are probably the only decent road trips in the Big 12 and even then it's mostly Texas.
