That ND win last night got me thinking about 1993.

How the frick did FSU get the nod as the National Champion?

ND beat them by a TD the 3rd to last week of the season...ND's only loss was by 2 points to #17 Boston College the next week.

Voters put ND #1 after beating FSU and then put FSU back to #1 the next week after ND loses.

Why, the voters only dropped FSU to #2 after losing to ND. And then when ND lost the second to last game, put FSU right back at #1.

FSU was gifted Bobby Bowden's first National Title
.

If you watch the broadcast, the announcers still say after the ND loss, should FSU still be #1? They were on the road and only lost by a TD?

I swear FSU got the Bama treatment in the 90's.

ND should've been awarded at least a share of the National Title in 1993.

There are far worse examples.

Alabama in 1966 and Penn State in 1994 are two of the most egregious in history. I was only around for the 94 season and it seemed widely believed throughout the country Penn State was likely the best team that year but for some reason the voters were determined to keep them in 2nd.

People complain about the playoffs now but they eliminated the scenario of a legit major program going undefeated and getting no shot.

The media really wanted Bobby Bowden to win a national championship that season. He and Tom Osborne were both sentimental favorites that year because they were two very successful head coaches that had been with their respective programs for years without managing to win a national championship.

2011 LSU. Should never have had to play Alabama again after beating them in Tuscaloosa. Would have destroyed Oklahoma state in the national championship.

ETA: Of course, this indirectly lead to 2019 so I’m at peace with it now.

Can't even compare those situations.

LSU got the opportunity to win it, they just failed to do so.

Penn State in 1994 went undefeated and wasn't even given the opportunity to play for the title. It's something that's happened quite a few times in history, but Penn State in 1994 is remembered because of how dominant that team looked.

2000 was hosed by bcs putting fsu ahead of them for the title game and the canes would have smoked OU

2002 bad call

Should be 3 time champs

They weren't denied an opportunity, they went to the bowl the Big Ten's bowl tie-in sent them to.

That’s what they get for joining the B1G

Nebraska was arguably shafted by the refs the year before in the Orange Bowl but they were ranked #1 by a healthy margin so I don’t know where this narrative comes from that Penn St was widely thought to be the best team. And please don’t give me any nonsense about how Penn St dropped because they didn’t blow out Indiana it’s completely false and easily debunked by simply looking at the schedules and the polls. Nebraska was getting the most first place votes even when PSU was ranked #1

OSU wins in regulation if they call this obvious hold (or the second one on the same play) in the 4th quarter and there is no "controversy". Oh and he also caught the ball for a first down anyway.

Damn OSU almost got robbed of that title

But the unofficial rule was that two undefeated teams in different bowls would split the title. They ditched the rule in 1994.

The thing about unofficial rules is you can ignore them whenever you want.

I can't argue with FSU 93. It's the first one and it's special but it's never felt all that great to me. On the flip side we never should have had to play a damn Spurrier UF team not just twice but back to back in 96. FSU wasn't going to lose to any other team in the country that year, but we had no chance of beating Wuerffel and Spurrier twice

If he caught it for a first down anyway how would making the holding call have meant tOSU wins in regulation?

And just for the record I don’t think Miami was jobbed it was the right call
