Texas has to play a first round game because they lost, UGA doesn't. If there were no auto byes for conference champs then the game would have been pointless, outside of who is #2 and who is #3.
I'm not hard set on the auto bye for power 4 conferences +1 other conference, like it is now. It didn't work great this year but I don' think we should judge it on one year.

something I do want to see changed is the bye teams not getting a home game. Bowl game sites shouldn't be in play until the semifinals

They almost have to make the quarters bowl games because of NYE/NYD. People aren't going to travel to the semis, unless they're nearby.

Is it SMU’s fault they didn’t help form the SEC or were ever asked to join?
This is about what’s good for college football as a whole, not Bama or the SEC.
The SEC is undoubtedly the top conference and its often a war of attrition. I love watching SEC ball.
But the kids at SMU, Az State, Boise, etc. who bust their arsses just as hard on the practice field and against whomever they play week to week shouldn’t be penalized every year for not having the privilege of being aligned with what evolved over the years into being the best college football conference.
