The next iteration of the College Football Playoff, starting in 2026, is expected to be formalized in the next 24 hours. A 14-team format is expected starting in 2026, as leagues are signing an MOU and having final discussions.

Multiple sources told ESPN on Thursday that each league and Notre Dame are expected to sign a legal agreement by midday on Friday. It’s a memorandum of understanding that lays out broad terms of what the next contract will look like.

The biggest hurdle in any agreement was believed to be the ACC and Big 12, whose presidents on Wednesday authorized their commissioners to adopt the framework of a new CFP contract.

The B1G and SEC conference championship games are going to be like NFL preseason games soon

Wouldnt you kind of want to see how the first expansion goes before you expand it again?

Twelve was already too many.

How many 11-14th ranked teams at the end of the regular season are deserving of playing in the the playoffs?

Just stupid...CFB can't get out of its own way and I was actually ok with 12.

Really not that big of a deal.

Similar to NFL. Only 2 first round byes instead of 4

If there's no byes they must get rid of conference championship games. Sure it would be nice to win your conference but that's a massive disadvantage when both teams playing would get in the playoffs anyway.

It's amazing how every sport I loved has ruined itself. College football, NFL, NBA, and Premier League have all gone to shite. This world sucks more by the day.

Why not just go ahead and make it 68 teams like basketball

Going down to 2 byes instead of 4 is kind of a big deal. At least with 4 byes that were reserved for the highest ranked conference champs, the odds of controversy over which 4 conference champs get 1st round byes was pretty slim. Now we're setup for playoff committee shenanigans when 12-1 or 11-2 B1G / SEC champs get 1st round byes while 13-0 ACC / Big 12 teams have to play in the 1st round.

That's not a good trade off for adding 2 more teams that are almost assuredly going to be 9-3 teams that finished 4th or 5th in the SEC or B1G

I’m not sure why the G5 continues to hang around. Go start a playoff. If that 1.5 million breaks your athletic department, drop down the FCS and drop sports. I say that as fan of a school who could be one of those teams it breaks.

Allowed Arab countries to buy clubs and the current financial fair play. It makes even harder for smaller clubs to compete and the top clubs can break the rules and not be punished. Money is the common denominator for sports’ downfall

They wouldn’t have bought clubs if the Premier League was anything less than an awesome product. They’d probably hate a system where the existing owners decided whether to let a new one in

I don’t think schools really want a bye because that’s a lost game on campus
