can you name 20 of their owners off the top of your head? There are relatively few "celebrity" owners.

Because most are owned by a conglomeration of owner or a corporate entity.

Few if any George Stienbrenners,Ted Turners or Bob Krafts around.

Just too much money and risk to be owned by a single indidual or even his family.

when we talk about owners in sports terms, we refer to the one person by definition who has the majority controlling interest in a franchise... a 2% owner of a certain team isn't the "owner"

i believe the NFL at least requires one person to have at least 51%

the money in sports has gotten so big that owners have a certain level of public awareness if they can even afford to own a team

maybe owning a franchise doesnt make you famous worldwide, but it definitely buys a lot of social status in the circles you run in. do you think anyone that isnt completely oblivious within 90 miles of new orleans doesnt know who tom benson is?

Not even and close

NFL ownership trust

While SOME plurality owners bask in the limelight its moronic to think its the reason people invest in sports franchises.

Proceeds to name one.

Kraft, Benson, Bowlen, Irsay, Blank, Mara, Ford, Rooney, Jones. The Steinbrenner boys in MLB.

ETA: I guess the Rooneys don't actually own that much of the Steelers any more.

Ok,wrong about Kraft and Blank and didn't really do research on the others but you're probably wrong about them.

Neither are the sole owners of their franchise.

It is harder than I originally thought, tried to do it without the NFL, I couldn't get to 15. That said I could easily name half the owners in the NFL.

Reinsdorf, Steinbrenner, Wilpon, Loria, Dolan, Henry, Angelos, does the Nintendo guy still own the Mariners?

Benson, Cuban, Buss, Dolan, MJ, Allen

Mario Lemieux
