On this day, Bob Gibson tossed his 23rd CG of the 1968 season. After losing his last start vs. PIT 4 days prior, Gibby got his revenge by K'ing 14 Pirates in an 8-0 win. Gibson's 11th shutout of the season improved his record to 19-6 with a 1.03 ERA over 28 starts.

What a different era in baseball

I mean, during that season, he ended up with 28 CG's with only 22 wins. It's crazy.

I mean, they are coming, just slowly. Probably won't make it.

You aren't going to pick up games during American Legion week. That's just foolishness.

Look. Whatever about the OP. I'm just happy they are playing well, excited for the future of this young team, and glad I can actually discuss Cards baseball here. Even if it's with the cubbies.

A key part of the resurgence, Kolten Wong, went on the DL today. His defense has paid huge dividends during the hot streak. And his bat was coming on too (he's just under league average now with a 90something OPS+).

Cardinals called up Patrick Wisdom. Wisdom can play 3rd or 1st allowing either Carpenter or Gyorko to play 2nd if needed. Munoz and Garcia can also fill in at 2nd. Munoz will probably be the regular fill in.

wow

I asked that question at the right time.

Thoughts? I know the team has performed well, but do we feel confident in him going forward?

Yes, big fan. Groomed for years in the org by Tony La Russa and others. Knows the players at an incredible level.

Great read today from STL Post Dispatch

quote:

What La Russa saw by watching Shildt was the sum of many mentors. Farm director Gary LaRocque, a former minor-league manager, had pushed, nurtured and nourished Shildt’s ability. Field coordinator Mark DeJohn gave Shildt lessons he learned from Kissell and Ted Simmons. This past week, as he described the college of Cardinals Shildt had around him, La Russa paused, gave a slight hum of epiphany and explained his realization.

“Look at the young pitchers and then think back to Jon Jay, Skip Schumaker, and so many others, and the guys the Cardinals brought up know how to play — really play,” La Russa said. “A part of who he is is the job he did developing guys in the system. Mike’s edge is that he was brought up in that same system. Like the players, that system made him ready.”

La Russa was waiting in Shildt's office in Springfield after the double A Texas League finals back in 2012, pretty good company to learn from.

quote:

Less than 11 months removed from his retirement as Cardinals’ manager, La Russa had a break in his travel for the commissioner’s office and sneaked, unannounced, into Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 11, 2012, to see Shildt manage the first game of the Texas League finals. Before the manager could return, La Russa commandeered the office, sat behind Shildt’s desk, in the dark, set to surprise. His smile and championship rings were about all that could give the godfather away.

“True to Tony, he asked me questions about the game, and then we went to dinner,” Shildt recalled this past weekend in Denver. “Talked about baseball and playoffs and how to manage it, think about it, and what that looks like. I drove him back to the (hotel) in my 2006 Toyota Tundra — which I still have — and we talked for another hour and a half, till 3 a.m. That’s’ what Tony is about. Talk about gracious. Tony has layers of answers. Ask him a question and you’ll get an answer and then a follow-up answer and a residual answer. This is the wisdom he can give.”

now ur just happy about the future

Go look at this thread, “cubs are trash” don’t forget, y’all will catch them no problem. 6784 series wins in a row for the cardinals, should be way ahead in the standings by now.

Thats literally the "cardinal way". Always having a bright future, while maintaining a certain level of winning.

I was never jamming on the cubs. I gave the occasional dig at how many games back we were, but my entusiasm has been about the play of the cards. Would be great if we could capture the division, but getting into the playoffs would be a big enough accomplishment on it's own.

Cards have still kept it up. Cubs finally kicked it in to gear. We'll see what happens. Still a lot of baseball left.

Losing Wong will hurt. His defense alone has been game changing.

Yeah, but this team was aging badly and falling apart. The infusion of youth, and solid play from them, is exciting. Not going to say it's quite to that level, but I'm sure it was like looking at that Cubs team the year before and the year of them winning the WS. Young, exciting, and good.

Wacha starting tonight in Springfield, probably one more start in Memphis and then he's going back into the rotation. This should be a nice bump as well.

He was arguably our best pitcher this year.

No he's made 5 rehab starts, just had one last night in Memphis went 4 scoreless innings.

He'll be added Sept 1st with roster expansion, likely long/middle relief though they saved the 5th rotation spot for Wacha.

quote:

Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright, who has been working his way back from elbow problems since May, made what probably was his last start on his medical rehabilitation option Monday night at Class AAA Memphis. The start was just like the other five — scoreless.

3 year deal for Shildt.

Also a fun stat

quote:

@ESPNStatsInfo: The Cardinals are 26-12 under Mike Shildt, the best record in the NL since firing Mike Matheny.

That includes an MLB-best 19-5 record in August -- tonight they go for their 2nd 20-win month in the last decade (20-7 in May 2013).

In 2010, Shildt’s rookie-level Johnson City team won the Appalachian League title, and he was invited to join the big-league staff during September. La Russa let him be the steal sign: Shildt’s hand on the railing was the green light. La Russa needled him for staring at the manager.
