It was still always weird to me seeing a fanbase the size of the Cubs pulling for a perennial loser in those lean years.
Shocking that the biggest bandwagon fan on this site doesn’t understand sticking with a team.

My mom grew up in Illinois listening to Harry Caray do Cardinals radio, got to see my first game in old Busch in '87, Jack Clark beat the Giants with an extra inning HR, was hooked ever since.
Before the days of being able to find any game anywhere online, I'd spend many hours at night getting that very faint signal on KMOX to listen to Cards game on the radio. Was helpful when they played the Braves so I could lisen to the local broadcast.

I have a friend of mine who was born in Lafayette. Had no real pro team to cheer for but always liked baseball. He sort of barely followed the Braves (TBS). Took him to St. Louis once to visit, went to a game, and he is now as big a fan as I am of the Cards. He said he just loved the city and the stadium and the whole vibe that went with it.
He's only been a fan for 8-9 years, but he is into it. I'm sure there are all sorts of stories like that that highlight the different areas people can come from. And I don't really consider them bandwagoners either.

People were calling us Bandwagon fans on this board in 2010
It's been going on since 2003 when this board first started. It was really big during 2008 as well. Until 2016, I never understood how someone could even be a bandwagon Cubs fan. There are no bandwagons for perennial losers. The Cubs just had a ton of actual fans.

We've had Cubs game threads for most games here for as long as I can remember. Some new faces here and there but it's been the same 5-8 guys for the most part before and after 2016
Yeah, the bandwagon Cub fan stuff is based on very little fact or reality. I've been a Cub fan here in Louisiana since 1973. Cable came in around the early 80's and there are a few folks I grew up in an around who became Cub fans in that era. Either folks I already knew or came to know because of shared interest in the Cubs.
And I gotta say all these bandwagon Cub fans that folks keep talking about here and elsewhere....I haven't met one. All the one's I know have been Cub fans for a long time and through some pretty tough years.

You aren't looking very hard.

think we should have a joint Cubs/Cards thread every year
I’m down as long as they don’t mind me saying “frick the Cubs” every now and again

Cubs just won their sixth in a row.

Les, these bozos don’t have the gumption to remonstrate with you to your face.

Ho hum.... Another dubbya for the best team in the national league.

Nah, I think you and others of your take are looking waaaaayyy too hard. I engage Cub fans all the time as during baseball season I wear Cub gear often.
These folks that have been fans since 2016...still haven't met one and I have come to know a good bit of Cub fans over the years. It's a fallacy started for who knows what reason, but it's about as polar opposite of the reality as you can get.

Just an update.
2 weeks since thread started.....1 game gained by the cards.
