Is this happening?

LINK

ETA: I originally and improperly titled this thread saying this bill was P2P. That is not the purpose of the bill. The purpose is to allow players to receive benefits for their likeness. Thanks.

The NCAA would be wise to find a way to accept and adapt or their jobs will cease to exist

1 of the lines in the NCAA letter to the California governor over this situation is... and I'm paraphrasing here... we're working on a universal solution to this problem right now

That's the whole point of the bill. Alone it does nothing, but it's part of a growing call to action nationally.

Passing unanimously signals there is a ton of public support behind it.

I think it’s pretty clear what this does. It will simply make paying for players no longer against the rules. If that’s what you want I guess it makes sense to support it.

My point is California knows the bill is useless by itself. They've got no authority over the NCAA. However, it shows how strong the sentiment is for letting NCAA athletes earn money off their likeness.

Is there a group of people less mainstream than politicians in California?

I don’t think what they do says anything about public sentiment.

You seem to feel pretty strongly against this. Why?

If/when this does happen
I hope we don’t cheap out on a QB because we decide to create a new men’s volleyball team or bass fishing or some shite

No, and yes.

No, if schools want to pay them, let them. Or if they can be paid for their likeness, then they shouldn’t be penalized.

The problem comes in implementation, and this is why I don’t think it’ll ever work. With title ix, you can’t decide to pay just football and basketball, you have to pay everyone, even all the female sports and the non-revenue generating male sports.

There are only about 10 colleges/universities that are in the black with their athletic budget. For those schools, they afford to pay players, somewhat. For everyone else, where does the money come from? For public universities, does it mean the state now has to pay those players, and at the expensive of what? For private universities, what gets cut to cover the cost?

This law is really just symbolic isn’t it? The state can’t regulate the NCAA and nothing legally was preventing players from making money off their likeness (just NCAA regulations)

Am I missing something?
