So Bryce finished April batting .231 with 6 homers and a WAR of 0.1. He is a defensive liability in the outfield with a dWAR of -0.5

Do you think the Phillies are getting a good return on their investment so far?

Another way to frame this is that he has a 122 wRC+, is playing solid defense, and on pace for about 5 WAR

He will finish this season with around 4 war but I can’t see him being anything more than average past his 30s. His defense is pretty bad and his swing won’t age well.

How do Machado's numbers compare?

17th in attendance last year.
5th this year.

More butts in the seats, more merchandise, more exposure.

Fangraphs credits him with a full win of WAR, with positive defensive numbers.

That probably says more about the kabuki-ish nature of the stat than anything else.

There are a billion different defensive stats out there. The ones fangraphs uses, with their faults, believe he is playing strong defense right now

You know a lot of people think an opt-out is great for the player because it helps them maximize their earnings but I've always thought it's great for the clubs as well. Players with opt-outs are likely to be more motivated to bust their arse so they can get another big contract a few years down the line. That's why Harper's decision not to insert an opt-out into his contract raised warning flags for me. What's the motivation for him to put in the extra work during the off-season or spend more time in the cage and watching video when he's in the middle of a slump?

Say what you want about Bruce Harper, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who doesn’t care. I think he is motivated to be great whether he has an opt-out or not.

Machado is playing incredible defense and on pace for a 5 WAR season even with the mediocre start at the plate. Hell, the guy put a bWAR near 7 with a .750ish OPS one year. Machado will likely live up to the contract if he plays just average on offense. Very different from Harper whose value is almost entirely tied to what he does at the plate.

As far as the OP:

A. It’s been one month.
B. He hasn’t been amazing, but you cherry picked stats to make it sound worse than it was. He does have a .231 AVG, but he has a .376 OBP, which unless you have been in a 20 year coma, you should know is much more important than batting average. And he has been worth 1.0 fWAR.
