Whether or not it came back to haunt them is a matter of opinion. They did lose the game. Going for it and failing cost them about 35 yards in field position. Had they punted and stopped MSU, they could have gained possession at about midfield and won the game with a field goal. Remember, there were around 6 minutes left when this happened.

And if they get it, drive down, burn off all the clock and score under a minute, they win. It was a yard, not 2, not 3, not 20. One yard. It's one of those, "if we can't get this we don't deserve to win" mentalities, and the D still held.

Against Michigan, how you can justify that is beyond me. The fact that they had a shitty QB makes getting the easy 3 points even MORE important. Worst decision I've seen all year.

The fact they had a shitty QB made it extremely important they make it one possession.

This can be argued either way. Personally, I'm on the side of getting the points, especially with an unproven QB.

You are essentially saying that Montana was shitty, but yet you trust him to do what it takes to get the TD? You are making no sense.

I expect him to be able to complete a 3 yard pass, yes. Drive the field? No.

I think the original poster is wrong. Sure, those 2 decisions were aggressive and unconventional, but my sense was that Kelly is trying to get ND to believe they can win again. Tall order given the last 3 seasons. I followed him at Cincy and while he's not conventional in the Tressel mode, he's also not irrational.

I think focusing on those 2 calls is silly and should be lost in the fact that ND (at least to my eyes) looks much improved fundamentally over any of Weis's teams. They don't have silly penalties. The OL and DL play with better technique. The WRs route running is better. Special teams are better. Crist, for a 2 game starter, looks better than any other new starters at big programs.

Kelly will get them to a minimum 9 wins per season starting soon. The question is whether they can get to 12 and that depends on their defense. Can't win a title without a great defense. They have a few stud players but not enough.

You, sir, can GTFO. Kelly is one of the top five coaches in the country, he is trying to turn a program around.

Yeah, OK. My eyes tell me different. I hope I'm wrong. As I said, I have no hate for the Irish.

Would you be mad if we only lost one???

Of coarse not.

We need Miles to have a good year to keep this recruiting class locked down

That will always be the case. I don't even think it would be a deal breaker for most of our recruits. There really is no excuse for offense to look as bad as it does when we have more talent there then all but a few elite programs. Miles stuck with Crowton after the last two seasons of this, it is now on him.
