do you mean underrated?

its more about Michael Oher than Bill James...the most substantial thing he says about left tackles is that Ogden and Pace are good.

Different book. the Blindside is a Michael Lewis book about Oher and Ogden. Blindsided is a statistically influenced response about the myths of football.

I'm looking forward to the Rant's reaction to Nick Saban wearing LSU colors for the movie version of the book:

The book is about the evolution of the left tackle and is current position as a top four level of importance in the modern game of NFL Football. Thanks to Bill Walsh and a larger emphasis on the passing game.

That's the one by KC Joyner I believe. I flipped through for about 20 minutes at B&N when it first came out. Didn't really seem to catch my eye.
I didn't do an indepth review to see if there were holes in his conclusions though

Sorry SFP, missed your your original post. We shall see what happens to Oher in the big leagues.

I did the same thing at Border's after it came out. I think the section on the left tackle is only 20 or 25 pages long. I ended up reading the section on left tackles, and his research wasn't particularly convincing to me. I only browsed the rest of the book, but I think the whole thing is about 230 pages or so, and most of the topics are covered for less than 10 pages.
Unlike Moneyball, it isn't a coherent narrative, either.

I haven't read it. Sorry.
Though I do think the LT is overrated nowadays. Kind of the whole so underrated its not overrated thing.

overrated in a cap sense has gone out of the window lately b/c the cap keeps going way the frick up
Posted on 7/5/09 at 6:47 pm to SlowFlowPro
I would say overrated in the sense that soon only LT's are going to be elected to the HOF.

I read it. Basically KC Joyner is saying that while the LT is important due to it being the QB's blind side, its more important to have a complete O-line because any D-coordinator worth his grain of salt is going to attack the weakest point of that line.
Ex: Say you have an all pro LT, but a journeyman RT... the blitz will likely come from the right side.

That ignores the fact that the other teams best pass rusher usually lines up against the LT. How many teams in the NFL can push MArio Williams level pass rush at any point on a O Line?

which is still an advantage. Finding guards are easier than finding tackles, and having a defender come from the right, in the QB's line of vision, is far better than coming from the back and causing a turnover or injury

Blitz packages, the best rusher doesn't line up in the same place every play etc.

He might not line up in the same place every play, but when you look at Mario Williams(Who is one of the 2-3 best pass rushers in the NFL) he is going to be going up against the LT on a significant majority of plays.
