1 season, $5.3m, no bonus AFAIK.

He only gets 2 game checks out of that, meaning 1/8 that total.

He’s a fully vested veteran that was on the roster for opening day so his seasons salary is guarenteed.

The John Kruk retirement method. Got his final hit in the first inning, left the stadium and listened to the game on his way home.

His behavior is conduct detrimental to the league. They can fine him for it.

To the league? Not really. The team can and probably will fine him and it'll just end up with some settlement.
If it seriously dawned on him that it wasn't in him anymore then it's probably better for everybody that he didn't go back out there. Probably should stay at the game though.

Pretty sure that's not how it works if he retires. It can't be..

I believe teams can go after your signing bonus if you retire while under contract, but the guarentees are well....guarenteed.

Looks like contracts are going to have to add another "if....then no money" clause.

I'd love to retire like that one day. Middle of the work day in the middle of the week, in a meeting I don't like or dealing with someone I don't like. Just get up, mutter something about being completely disrespectful, go to the restroom and change into street clothes, and just walk out and leave.

I work with someone that might do that here in a year. The process has already started. Wears jeans every day now

Well if you’re gonna get out of there, you want to do it before the first cold front comes through

I don’t think that’s right at all. Retiring forfeits guaranteed money

Professional football is a harsh and demanding game. I couldn't imagine playing it, if you weren't 100% into it.

I can't imagine what the experience of suddenly realizing he wasn't into it 100% would be like. To be frank, I could understand it feeling either terrifying, or at least like it might be insane to continue.

Throw in that you are getting your brains beat in as a Bill, and the decision makes some sense in context.

If true, the owners are stupid people for agreeing to this scenario.

Yep and that's true in all leagues.

In fact, he won't even get his paycheck for the second game since the Bills will certainly fine him for, you know, abandoning the team at halftime.
