Payne Stewart
Was my favorite golfer growing up. I was devastated.
But kobes death is the biggest of my life tome

I don’t think any sports death compares to it due to the circumstances and Kobe’s age and health and worldwide fame. The only celebrity death that I can remember being as jaw-dropping and shocking was Princess Diana. Michael Jackson’s death was bigger but nowhere near as surprising because it was obvious he had been in ill health for some time.

How good of a golfer was Payne Stewart at the time of his death?

I mean Kobe was retired. If you really want to rank deaths, I would put guys who died that were still active ahead of this one.
A lot of things mix together to put this at #1.
1) Global iconic status.
2) Recently retired.
3) Relatively young
4) Suddenness/randomness factor
5) Major additional tragedy of being with daughter and in fact going to her own basketball game.
6) It's 2020 and we're all absorbing this pretty much as quickly as they find the info.

Agree this is up there with Diana. Honestly it’s probably quite a bit bigger.

He was on the US's Ryder Cup team and won the US Open the year of his death so I would say he was pretty damn good.

I think princess di is the best comparison (circumstances).

Diana bigger globally, probably by a wide margin.
Similar situations though.
Michael Jackson death was way different and not everyone was shocked or sad.

Dale Earnhardt was a bigger figure in his sport than Kobe. But his sport wasn't on the level of NBA, especially worldwide.
Roy Hallady is pretty similar.
Steve McNair had the murder-suicide and strange true crime element adding shock value to the story.
In terms of fame, I think only Ayrton Senna is going to match Kobe. That's worldwide obviously. He wasn't the megastar in the US that he was internationally due to us not caring much about F1.

The subject isn’t “most untimely” or “most shocking” sports deaths.
It’s “biggest sports deaths.”
It’s “biggest sports deaths.”

This is by far the biggest one. Hard to admit it bc it’s fresh, but it really is. The global impact of the NBA, the iconic status of Bryant. This is the largest sport death of all time.

Junior Seau before this. But I'm right in the middle of his stomping grounds so it may have just seemed bigger here.
